My name is Alisha. I am a Business Analyst by day and aspiring Pastry Chef by night.

I love to challenge myself with new recipes and techniques as often as I can. As a new member to the Daring Bakers/Cooks group, I am very excited and have been challenged in a fantastically fun way so far.

How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?

This is my first month as a Daring Baker and I am pleasantly surprised with how challenging it has been. This month, there were 2 challenges to choose from but I wanted to start off with a bang so I had a blast challenging myself to complete both.

What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?

My favorite gadget is the sifter. I think I like it because it’s such a simple process that accomplishes so much and really makes a difference. Plus, it’s fun!
My favorite appliance is the oven! I enjoy sitting in front of it and watching my creations change. Is that dangerous?

Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?

Not really a specific dish. I have been making a variety of cookies for a few years and I do individual Christmas cookie boxes every year for my co-workers. However, I am trying to branch out from just cookies so I made homemade marshmallows last Christmas too.

Is there any recipe and/or technique that we haven’t covered yet that you’d really like to make/learn?

Being new to the Daring Baker crew, there is a lot I am hoping to experience but I would love to master the Souffle of any flavor.

Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Genre of music? Actor? Actress?

My favorite book is written by Diana Gabaldon and it’s called Outlander. Outlander is this first novel in a series that you won’t regret reading if you get the chance.

You’ve just won $5000.00!!! What would you spend it on?

A trip with my husband.

What is the ultimate comfort food to you?

A hot breakfast including biscuits and gravy with a side of grits and a side bacon !

Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite.. why?


Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?

Reading, traveling, spending time with family, relaxing at home with nothing planned.

How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?

I am brand new to blogging. I wanted to join Daring Bakers and I wanted to do it right so I started a Blog. I am enjoying it so far!

What’s your favorite cookbook for desserts/baking? What’s your favorite cookbook for savory/cooking?

My favorite cookbook for Desserts is The Art & Soul of Baking. I do not have a favorite cookbook for savory but get a lot of recipes from

Is there one food that you seriously dislike/hate? If so, which is it and why?

I am not a fan of Cilantro, or Mexican food. I can enjoy it if I have to eat it but it is never my first, second or third choice.

What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?

Hydrangeas were the only flower at my wedding! I grew up with 2 huge bushes next to my house and have loved them ever since.

Do you have a favorite local restaurant? If so, why is it your favorite and what kind of food is served there?

I enjoy a few restaurants for different reasons. I like Lucille’s for its Southern feel (the only place I have found in CA that you can order Sweet Tea) and I also like fancy restaurants like Maestro’s for a nice Filet Mignon (bone in, please).

Who taught you how to cook and/or bake?

I didn’t necessarily have a teacher. I have learned the most in my adult life through trial and error.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas. My husband I visit my family in AL so we get some cold weather and just the feel of my house at Christmas is great!

You’ve had a rough week. How do you relax after a rough week?

Bake or just relax with no plans to go anywhere!

Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?

My husband and I really enjoyed Scotland but we haven’t really made a traditional vacation spot yet.

Do you have a food addiction?


If you had the choice of a free kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom makeover – which would you choose and why?

Kitchen, I would love all Viking appliances with an island and an overhead vent!

Do you watch any competitive cooking shows? Like Top Chef or Hell’s Kitchen? If so, which is your favorite and why?

I like Iron Chef America. It’s incredible what they can come up with in such a short time. I am not fully convinced that they are completely in the dark about what the secret ingredient is but am impressed by their execution of the plates nonetheless.

What’s your favorite “sweet” spice? How about your favorite “savory” spice?

My favorite sweet spice is nutmeg and my favorite savory spice is fennel. I like nutmeg because it reminds me of the holidays and I like fennel because I usually grate it in my mortar and I love using that tool!

If you could eat in any celebrity chef’s restaurant which restaurant would it be, and which chef owns it?

I would have to say Paula Deen. Not because she is from the South and not because she uses a lot of butter but because I feel like that would be the most wholesome meal for me with big portions!

Do you have a time saving kitchen tip you’d like to share with us?

I recently learned how much more efficient it is to butter a pan with your pastry brush. I used to run the stick around the pan really working to get it into the nooks and crannies but this is a quick, clean way to butter and flour a pan.
