I’m currently a full time pastry student and part time Painter of Silly Animals with Foods.
How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?
I’ve been a Daring Baker since February 2009. I love the diversity in the group and the fact that even when aren’t supposed to stray from a recipe, everyone comes up with such individual end products you’d hardly know we all made the same thing!
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?
Ohh, tough! I REALLY love my ice cream maker, though I’m known for nearly perfecting the art of making it without a machine before I had one! I’d never give up my Kitchenaid. I’m also partial to my mortar and pestle for quick spice grinding. Mmm, spices!
Do you have a favorite book?
I’ve just started getting back into reading for fun (daily subway rides will rekindle a love for reading in anyone!) but my favorite and most-used book is The Flavor Bible. So much fun for coming up with amazing and often surprising flavor combinations for recipes!
You’ve just won $5000.00!!! But it comes with some stipulations.. you can’t spend it on your kids or your significant other! This is all YOURS. What would you spend it on? (we’re also going to fantasize that you have no bills whatsoever! Woo!! Hehee)
Uhhh, knowing me, fancy ingredients. I could build the ultimate fruit salad! Maybe some new clothes, too, I seem to always need those. And of course a few really good meals out. Oh, and a bunch of dessert cookbooks! I don’t have many – my budget just doesn’t allow for books that aren’t from the bargain bin!
What is the ultimate comfort food to you?
Spaghetti with my mom’s tomato sauce. It was always my favorite food growing up and I don’t even really eat spaghetti otherwise anymore. Last time she gave me a container of it I COVETED it and ate it for three thoroughly-savored meals.
If you could bake/cook with other Daring Bakers/Daring Cooks, who would they be and why?
There are so many! I would really love to go to Australia someday and bake up a storm with Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella and Y of Lemonpi, though. They are both beyond awesome.
What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?
Probably lavender ’cause it’s so darned tasty! Roses for the same reason. Or basil! Or…any fresh herb I guess. Pity I have a black thumb. I’d love to have a little indoor herb garden but I’d kill it so fast you’d never even know it was there to begin with
What’s your favorite holiday and why?
Generally Halloween, though I haven’t done much of anything for it in a few years. I grew up with awesome homemade costumes so it was always really exciting, and of course there’s candy! Lots of candy! I also have a fondness for all things spooky and macabre.
You’ve had a rough week. We feel your pain. How do you relax after a rough week?
First, lots of sleep! And a chat with my pet tortoise about how lucky he is to be a tortoise. Then, once I feel ready to face the world again, a little adventure to a bubble tea shop or bakery for some sweet edible therapy, and probably a little painting or baking/ice cream making at home later.
Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?
Well, it WAS New York City, but now I live there, sooo…I haven’t found a new one yet! My dream is to travel around the world and learn how to use varying local fruits and make desserts with them, so who knows!
Aside from chocolate for most of us, do you have a food addiction?
Definitely not chocolate for me, not that I don’t like it or even crave it sometimes! For me it’s fruit and tea! I NEED tea every day and fresh fruit makes me oh so very happy.
What did you eat for dinner last night? Did you prepare it or someone else?
A big salad. I made it. I ate it because I figured I should balance out all of the gougeres and cream puffs I had eaten in class earlier in the day.
The Martha – Angel of Domestication or Minion of Evil? Why?
I love Martha! When I had a tv I watched her show almost every morning – my mom and I used to watch her together, getting especially excited over her neat Halloween ideas (and my mom used to always buy the Halloween issue of Living). I went to a red carpet event recently and she spit her gum out in front of me. Our eyes locked and she seemed to silently say…”YOU NEVER SAW THIS.”
