Easter Food Ideas

Easter is just around the corner, and regardless of one's religious orientation, it can be a fun time for all! Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, so there are lots of symbols representing life in traditional Easter foods. Different countries have different traditions, but food brings everyone together. Here is a snapshot of Easter foods from all over the world.
Eggs are a symbol of life, which is how they have been come to be associated with Easter. Easter eggs are hard boiled then coloured and decorated in many different hues today, though they used to be coloured a deep red to represent the blood of Christ. Eggs can be dyed naturally using onion skins, as shown in the beautiful photo above, of Kokkina Avga (Greek Easter eggs).

Simnel cake is similar to a rich Christmas fruit cake, but has a layer of sticky marzipan in the middle. It is eaten at Easter and traditionally has 11 marzipan balls decorating the top of the cake, representing the loyal apostles.

Hot cross buns are perhaps the most recognisable Easter goodie. Traditionally eaten on Good Friday, the buns are marked with crosses, meant to signify the crucifix. Hot cross buns traditionally contain fruit and spices, but if you would like a delicious twist to this bun, you have to try a chocolate chip hot cross bun! This is my favourite recipe!
Now, this brings me to Easter and chocolate! During Lent, which is right before Easter, people used to refrain from eating rich foods. So when Easter arrived, the festivities included partaking in richer, more luxurious food, which included chocolate. Chocolates were a popular present that people exchanged at Easter. It is expected that 80 million chocolate Easter eggs will be eaten in the UK alone!

To end on an extremely adorable note, here is a Japanese twist on Easter eggs!
