Have Yourself a Supernatural Halloween

Written by Mandy of What the Fruitcake?!.

The hubby and myself have been watching "Supernatural" from season 1 and this has inspired the idea of a Supernatural Halloween.

Now, to be honest, I'm more of a Christmas girl, Halloween's not exactly a big holiday where I'm from in South Africa, but here in Ireland it is definitely enjoyed.

Kids costumes start appearing in stores in September, along with shelves dedicated to ghoulish treats, either filled with something green and gross or at least shaped like something eerie. I could definitely get into it, probably moreso when we have kids. But for now I'll have to enjoy Halloween as an adult. Hence a Supernatural theme seems fitting.

If you're also wanting to enjoy a more adult Halloween, then maybe a Supernatural Halloween is just the thing for you too!

Firstly, you've got to get the mood right, and that means the right music. So put on your playlist bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, Credence Clearwater Revival, and even a little bit of Bon Jovi is allowed, after all, the Winchester boys are all about the music in between kicking demon butt.

Next, you've got to get the right feel in the room. Think of all those cheezy motels they stay in. I'd pick something suitably gaudy like paper pink flamingos and palm trees (this may also work to your benefit as these items could even be on sale at this time of the year!). You could also go more spooky and have your party or meal in the middle of fanged monsters and ghosts with spider webs and eerie lighting.

Then, get out the leather or denim jackets, put on your most worn pair of comfy jeans and t-shirt, possibly in plaid, and you're almost set.

Homemade juicy burger with crisps and a cold beer. Ok, I know it's a Weiss beer, but my hubby wasn't complaining!

The last thing is the food, and being that this is a FoodTalk article, I'll give you a few suggestions and a tasty recipe to help you along.

Firstly, the Winchester boys do tend to hang out in bars, so put out some bowls of pretzels and nuts, possibly next to some of their grave cleansing equipment like a shovel or spade, salt, lighter fluid and a matchbox or lighter. You never know if you'll need to sort out some pesky remains while trying to enjoy your party!

The Winchester brothers enjoy their beer and soda, so stock up on the ice and cold beverages.

With chilli cheese!

I stand to be corrected, but it's possible that Dean eats a burger in every episode, well, he's always eating anyway. Burgers are his staple. Sam's more aware of his health so sticks to things like salads, but who would want to eat a salad at a party? Go with the burger! If you're only have a few people around, make big homemade juicy burgers for each of your demon killing friends, and don't forget the fries! If you're catering for a larger party then go with sliders/mini burgers and crisps/potato chips. You don't want to be frying up pot after pot of fries for a big crowd.

To end your meal or party, you've got to have pie! Dean loves pie, Sam loves pie. Fruit pie, pecan pie, cream pie, baked pie, fridge pie, just make pie!

Mmmmm.... aged cheddar melting on a burger....

I've put together what I think is a burger that Dean would enjoy. It's juicy and packed with flavour, so you just can't go wrong!

Herb Burger (herbs optional but highly recommended!)

Ingredients

Makes 4 - 6 Large Burger Patties, 8 - 12 Slider Patties

500g Ground Beef (I use 95% lean, but you can use any good quality mince you prefer)

2-3 large cloves Garlic, crushed

10 - 15 leaves Fresh Mint, finely chopped (optional but recommended)

1/4 cup Chopped Fresh Flat Leaf Parsley

1 tsp Ground Sea Salt

1 tsp Freshly Cracked Black Pepper

Method

  • Put the mince in a large bowl and loosen up with a fork
  • Put the rest of the ingredients into the bowl with the mince and combine together
  • Tip: I find it best to use your hands for this. Simply mush the ingredients together, tossing the mixture occassionaly so that the herbs and seasoning gets evenly distributed
  • Divide mixture into 4 or 6
  • Shape into patties about 1.5cm - 2cm thick
  • Keep them in the fridge covered with plastic wrap until ready to cook

If grilling in the oven

  • Turn grill/broiler on to hottest setting
  • Brush a little olive oil onto each patty and arrange on an oven tray
  • Once oven is ready, grill patties for about 2-3mins on one side
  • Flip patties and finish off by grilling for another 2-3mins or until done

If frying in a pan or skillet on the stove

  • Heat your pan or skillet on highest heat with a splash of olive oil
  • Tip: Your pan needs to be really hot so that the meat sears well, don't be afraid to crank it up!
  • Cook patties on one side for 2-3mins
  • Flip and cook the other sides to finish off for another 2-3mins or until done
  • Assemble your burger with your favourite toppings and enjoy!

I find that the success to any event is thinking of the little things. Like the right kind of music in the background or the ambiance in the room, whether it's candles, flowers or cheezy pink flamingos.

I spend a lot of time on preparing a menu for my friends to enjoy, but I never forget how important a feel or look is to the success of a great meal. Even if it's a simple thing like little splashes of one or two colours here and there where there's white everywhere else, or if you go to great lengths to dress up the whole room with streamers, balloons and flowers.

Your guests will always remember the food, and they'll definitely appreciate and admire a thought out setting that you've taken a little bit of time to put together.

Happy Halloween!

Thank you for this post Mandy. I enjoyed the photos of the boys and the sandwiches, and I love the idea of Supernatural Halloween party theme. Supernatural is one of my top 10 favorite TV shows. I'm also currently watching the anime version; not bad but the live action is way better.

Happy Halloween!
