Australia Trip - Need Dining Recommendations!
Mon, 01/11/2010 - 12:15
I am traveling to Australia this week - yay! We have stops in Sydney, Melbourne, and Port Douglas. Are there any Aussie Daring Bakers/Cooks who can give great restaurant suggestions? My boyfriend and I are adventurous eaters, and will try anything once. Most definitely looking forward to fresh seafood, different kinds of Asian fare (have never had Malasian, but need to!), and meat pies. What else should we eat? Where should we eat it? No fine dining - we're not packing nice enough clothes for that. Any other suggestions are appreciated!

When you are in Melbourne try the Queen Victoria Markets they are worth a day in themselves, you can get all the ingredients for a lavish picnic and do that in one of the beautiful gardens close by. Also try St. Kilda (take the tram it is the last stop) and sample all the delicious cakes and treats in that part of Melbourne there are several dozen cafes in the area. Also Prahran just walk along Chapel street it has a large number of foodie places. Also here is a great site for "What to do in Melbourne"
All these places above are infested with excellent food places where you can drop in (only with T-shirt, shorts and thongs= flip-flops) and enjoy excellent food.
Brunswick Street Fitzroy is also excellent.
China town in the City is excellent for all sorts of Asian foods.
Incidently the museum/art gallery in Melbourne is excellent and the best in Australia located across the road from the Gardens.
While in Melbourne buy an all-day tram ticket that is all you will need, you can get to most things using the tram.
What to try - meat pies (try it from one of the meat pie sellers in the markets), pavlova, Asian foods. You must have a "hambuger with the lot" the fillings include lettuce, tomato, cheese, beetroot, grilled onion, bacon, a fried egg and pineapple. And yes you must have the beetroot and pineapple. Try a chicko roll, the hambuger and chicko rolls are both available at any good take-away shop.
You must have vegemite on toast while you are here, available everywhere.
And the some important treat for you is go to any supermarket and try TIM TAMS you'll be impressed it is the most popular biscuit (cookie) in Australia and you must do a TIM TAM slam while you are here LOL LOL.
In Sydney go to King Street Newtown dozens of cheap but high quality cafes, and Cabramatta this is more like going to Asia than Australia high concentration of Asian cafes and food (mainly vietnamese), also China town in the City is well worth it. And the Fish markets the largest in the Southern hemisphere.
In Sydney you must take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly it costs about $5 and you will see the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House the beautiful harbour and then go to Manly Beach and sample fish and chips in one of the many cafes on the beach.
Go to Milsons Point (railway station) and walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and then go to the Australian Hotel it has wonderful and cheap food and the most unusual beers made in Australia.
The Rocks in Sydney is a heritage area close to the Australian Hotel visit that area and go to the Lord Nelson Pub one of the oldest in Australia.
Also have a meat pie at Harry's Cafe De Wheels they are very good and the place is a treat also.

Thanks so much Audax! Lots of great suggestions there. Can't wait to be there - this is my first visit to Australia. My sister, brother-in-law, and niece live in Melbourne. They've been there 2+ years, but will most likely be transferred back to the States at the end of 2010. Figured there was no better time to check out Oz than now!
I love the Tim Tam Slam video - will be posting that to my blog the day we leave. Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed the Anthony Bourdain on Melbourne, a very eccentric foodie town! We didnt get to do much eating out when there, but it is really beautiful and if you get a chance to drive down the mornington peninsula then do, its wonderful. We had fun at the red hill farmers market and the red hill winery, beautiful and great food!
Hope you're enjoying your stay in Australia!
When you are in Melbourne, do check out the Belgian Beer Café in St. Kilda. For seafood, nothing beats Williamstown.
Cheers!

If you're already here in Melbourne and want an awesome burger, go to Andrews in Sth Melbourne. Lentil as Anything is always an adventure. Its at the Abbotsford Covent. Cheap affordable vegetarian food. The adventure is that you have no idea whats on the menu each day but its all vego.
China town is a must as is Victoria st in richmond. If you want fine dining then I recommend Maha bar and grill for amazing middle eastern food. There's amazing souvlaki on sydney rd brunswick.
Brunswick St Fitzroy - Polly has amazing cocktails, The Vegie bar for food, Trampoline for icecream. It's all delicious.
Eating in Footscray is always an adventure, there you will find the african communities.
Queen Vic markets - go to the bratwurst people. They are in the cheese and deli hall, on the elizabeth st side near the door across from mcdonalds. The boreks for the stall next to bratwurst guy are also amazing.
Koko black on lygon st in carlton or in the royal arcade (running between bourke st mall and little collins) is a must as is the lindt cafe on collins st for macaroons.
Red Hill, down on the penninsula, has amazing cheese, wine and beer. Montalto is a must for olives and wine. There is also a hot spring down there.
Ooooo and Phillip Island for the fairy penguins!
