Hi! I'm new to Daring Kitchen, getting ready to start my first project this weekend. I also have an 8 year old daughter who is on a daring mission of her own -- to bake a cake. She has had a lot of trouble in school getting organized for major projects so we are doing two summer "practice projects" so she can build skills doing something that is more fun than schoolwork. For the month of July she chose to bake a cake. Her big issues are choosing a project that is ambitious but still within her abilities (she tends to either do the bare minimum or overreach) and then pacing herself to get the project completed in time.
What I am looking for are some good web sites, cookbook recommendations or anything that would help her get started baking. I'd kind of like her to be overwhelmed with choices -- so she can learn to make a decision where the only consequence is how much eye rolling her mother does. I am going to have her assist with my first Daring Bakers project this week so she will have an example of me stepping a little bit out of my comfort zone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hi! I have this kid's cookbook called Pretend Soup by Mollie Katzen and Ann Henderson. It says its for preschoolers and up so I'm not sure if it might be too simple for your daughter but I love it and it's perfect for someone who is just starting to learn to cook. The recipes are simple and good with pictures for every step of the recipe kind of showing you what to do. I'm not sure if it's even still in print but it's worth a shot?? good luck Big Grin

I suggest giving "The Betty Crocker Cookbook for Boys and Girls" a look-see.

Thanks, I think it is too young but I will keep it in mind for when little sister inevitably wants to cook too.

Hi, I have a 10 year old daughter that is into baking. I'm ordering Baking Kids Love by Cindy Mushet and Sur La Table. It is written for 8-12 year olds. Sur La Table has a summer camp class with the same title and they use the recipes from this book. We live to far away for the class and it is too pricey for us anyway but the book is in our price range.

Hi, maybe she can start with a chocolate cake. Here's a really good recipe with a video of how it is made.
