the scrapbook paper I bought for my "backdrops." Cheaper and a wider variety than placemats or table cloths, and I can find it in any color/shade/design I'm looking for.
Unfortunately, not yet on the light box....I'm still frantically baking and cooking on Sunday afternoons, taking pics with the natural light, and posting throughout the week. But it sounds like I have a new project now!
That is genius! I am a terrible plater and the hideous but toddler-friendly placemats I keep on my table don't help, I don't think I ever would have thought of scrapbook paper!
Yes, I think this is a fabulous idea. I have the perfect paper hidden in a cabinet, too! Thanks a lot for the tip, because my food pictures are usually terrible.
Ha! I'm glad the advice helped! Honestly, I was roaming around Target thinking "Ugh, $5 for a placemat?" when I came across the more thrifty option. The little flower background in my profile pic was approx. $0.50.
Target is also great for super-cheap plastic plates in all different colors and designs. I got a red, lime green, black, brown, and white plate for maybe $12 total. I'm hoping they up my "food photography game" a little from Grandma's china w/little brown mushrooms and marigolds printed on it.
I feel you on the plates. I see all of these charming little vintage plates in other photos and it makes me need to rush out and find some of my own. I too picked up a few of those Target plates, the small appetizer plates are like $2 a pop! I think I'll keep scouring the thrift shops though and work up a collection.
It's amazing how these simple things can really change a photograph. I really had no idea.
I also bought some scrapbook pages for backdrops, too! I'm going to make it a regular habit to check out the scrapbooking section every time I go to a craft store.
TJ Maxx is my favorite place to buy random cute plates for pictures. Most single plates are just a couple of dollars and there are always things on clearance for a dollar each. I check out the Goodwill sometimes but they're not going to have anything that's nearly as stylish.
That is really a fabulous idea on the scrapbook background and one I would have never thought about!!
As for the plates; I also buy quite a lot through the internet. They're are a lot of people that sell old kitchen stuff for fun and if you take the time to surf around you will find some good and cheap addresses. I know have a few that I check on a regular basis and once in a while I buy a load for just a couple of euro's.
I've tried paper before, and I love it too.
As far as plates go, you can find brilliant ones at thrift stores for way cheap. There's usually a really good choice too each time you go, with lots of variates. Some of my favorite plates are ones I've gotten from thrift shops.
I too have used scrapbook paper and love it. I love how easy it is to switch out once you're tired of it. And as for plates, I second the idea of going to thrift stores. You can find some cute retro ones or even plain white or black ones for dirt cheap, and if you get tired of them you can just donate them back! Now that garage sale season is almost here I'm going to be scouring them for some cute, cheap plates as well.
Any discount store is a great place for silverware, plates, dishes, etc.. or even fabric (think curtains, placemats, etc...)
They usually have stuff sold singly (i.e. ONE cute plate) for $1 or so!
Art paper is a great idea for a backdrop too! Right now I'm just using an old black sheet, but I need to get my behind to Ross and get a little more creative.
Mahima, try making a light box. Check out Strobist. You can make one at home for under $10. i made it for under a $ here in India. I love using it in natural light most of the time.

Thank you soo much everyone for this beautiful idea! I used to wonder how on earth do these bloggers manage to get their pics so perfect!! Thanks a ton Deeba for sharing the link!!
I'm a scrapbooker and never thought about using those beautiful papers I have! Duh?! What a great idea for a back drop. I've been using fabric from Joann's - I go for those that are sale/clearance. Next time, I'm gonna bring out my collection of papers I think I LOVE my papers so much that I just didn't wanna do anything with 'em. HA! Look for scrapbook papers on sale in Joann's or Michael's...sometimes they are 6 for $0.96 ~ a great deal!
Thank you all so much for these great ideas. I'm new to the blog world and I was wondering how can all these blogger have all these perfect pictures.....mine are terrible! I will have to try...this is a good excuse to go and bake something new today.
I use scrapbook paper, too! My only trouble is that sometimes, I wish it were a little bigger, because it's not always easy to keep the edges of the paper out of my photos. Maybe I'm just not good enough at framing my shots yet...?

Scrapbook paper, eh?
Huh.
I use a light grey fabric and a black fabric for my art, never really thought about scrapbook paper for my cooking though. Interesting.
