trouble resizing photos- image becomes blurry- help!
Thu, 03/26/2009 - 10:11
Hey everyone,
I've been submitting photos to foodgawker for a few months now, and while some have been accepted, I have had 3 or 4 rejected due to "blurry when reduced in size". My original images are from a 10.3 megapixel camera, so they are being reduced quite a bit (submission size is 250x250 pixels), but I only seem to be having the issue with certain photos and I'm not noticing a common thread...
Any ideas/ suggestions?

Hi mlle noelle
Have the images been resized more than once? Resizing a photo that has already been resized (rather than going back to the original before resizing again) will cause pixelation, resulting in a blurry image. Reducing the size of the original sharp image should not result in any blurriness.
Based on the message you're getting from Foodgawker, it sounds like they are further reducing the resolution after you submit your photos - if the photos in question had already been resized multiple times, this might explain the problems you're having.
That's the first thing I thought of - hope it's of some help!

Thanks... I don't think this is what it is, since I am resizing from the original. I resize all my submissions myself so I can get them cropped just the way I want them. Hmm...

I had the same issue when I posted something in Tastespotting and Foodgawker. I'm not sure where mine went wrong because it was a macro shot and done RAW. For some reason they said it looked blurry (although I do have bad eyesight, my bf has better than 'perfect' eyesight and he said it was crisp - and I did resize it).
One thing is, if you shoot with your hands sometimes, no matter how steady, a slightest move can take out the crispness of an image.
Have you used a tripod for your shots? I know that's what I've started to try to do now...but haven't made any attempts to post to the websites since I started using the tripod.

mlle noëlle, what software are you using to re-size your photos? Do you use Photoshop by chance? If so, there are settings specifically aimed at maintaining sharpness while resizing images, which may help.

hmm, maybe that is the problem, that the blurriness due to camera shake is not noticeable when the photo is actual size, but gets "intensified" when resized?
Another part of the issue may be that there was a shallow depth of field, so only a small part of the image was in focus...
I do need to get a tripod, I had one and can't find it!!
I'm sure that wouldn't hurt.

I don't have photoshop, I just installed a program on my laptop that came with my camera, there was a CD that was included with an editing program. I also just use Microsoft photo editor when at work, it's pretty crappy though!

Try to use this picture resizing tool
http://www.softorbits.com/batch_picture_resize/
It works well!
Try searching for EasyCrop on google. It is a very good photo cropping freeware. I use it mainly at our product namer office.
