So is anyone making a special dinner to celebrate all things Irish?

I thought about it. I jumped the gun and made a Lamb pie last weekend. Delicious!

Green beer and green pasta are the answer to the problem of what to have on St. Patrick's Day. I have had green chicken (chook) wings, green bread and green chocolate cake (!!!!) on this special day for the Irish and surprisingly it isn't a very big day in Ireland itself only outside Ireland is it a huge celebration of the Blarney and the Clectic lifestyle. I think Beef with Guinness would be a great dish to have!

My mom is half Irish so it has always been a tradition in my family to have an Irish meal for St. Patrick's day. It's usually just stuff like corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, steamed carrots, etc.

Nope. Despite being half Irish, we never really celebrated it, and I've carried that over into my adult life.

Besides, Tuesdays as school nights for the hubby, so it's a quick meal between work and school for him.}:)

St. Patrick's day is celebrate everywhere but not in IRELAND! I've been living on Emerald Isle for the last 3 years and it's a day as normal - beside that you have a day off and there is a huge amount of drunk teenagres on the streets... Regarding the parade itself - hmm, I always watch it on the telly from Boston etc. .... So much for the St. Paddy's Sad

st Patrick's day is mine and micahs anniversary, so we had pancakes for breakfast, sushi for lunch and fast food for dinner, doesn't sound exciting but it meant a lot to us. esp cause we made the pancakes and sushi together.

Haha, every night on St. Patrick's Day, since I was a baby, we will have macaronie and cheese which we color green, and a huge pitcher of milk which we color green as well. Most people are grossed out by it, and they won't even eat it Tongue
Mom usually will make a leprechaun pie too.

As an Irish person, who has lived in Ireland all my life (24 years...) I can honestly say that you are sooo wrong. Paddy's day is a big deal here. It's a national holiday for crying out loud, everywhere shuts down (except for the bars and restaurants) and it's probably the biggest day and night out as regards the bars. You will find parades in even the least populated areas.

Also, as an Irish person, I find it insulting looking on tastespotting.com and seeing the crap people claim as Irish dishes. For a start, corned beef, seriously?! That is not, and has not been for centuries, an Irish staple. Cabbage and Ham (something my nana regularly makes for me, and no one makes it as well as she), yes, corned beef, no. Shepard's pie, another non-Irish dish, it's British in fact, and an insult to the Irish to claim it theirs, considering the history between us. Adding Guinness to something does not make it Irish. Have the damn stout as a pint, like any right minded Irish person would. And to those who insult us by making beef stew and calling it Irish, eh, no, it has to be mutton to be Irish stew, otherwise it's just stew.

I love people making things green and getting into the spirit of the day.

While I love that Irishness is celebrated worldwide, even if it is on a day that celebrates our patron saint who was not himself Irish, but I'm insulted that other countries think they celebrate it more, or better, than us. It'd be like me claiming that the Irish celebrate the 4th of July better than the Americans. It just isn't the case, and it's sheer ignorance or arrogance to claim so.

Sorry, that was quite a rant, it's just something that really gets up my nose.

Every year I make Colcannon with Irish Soda Bread and Shortbread Cookies. It's one of my daughters favorite meals. My husband likes it because I alway splurg and get him a selection of Irish beers. I treat myself to real Irish coffee using Irish whiskey.
