I am an elementary school teacher turned stay at home mom. I am dabbling in starting some at home…
…preschool activities with my son now that he is three, and we try to get involved in our community as much as possible. I love just about anything outdoors. I love to run, bike, walk, hike, backpack, and camp. I enjoy tending to my flower garden and we are just getting started on a fruit and vegetable garden. I also enjoy reading.
How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?
I have been a Daring Baker since February 2010. As I am filling out this questionnaire I am getting ready to complete my first challenge so I don’t have a lot of experience with the group yet. I do like the excitement of trying something new that is considered challenging in the realm of baking.
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?
I seem to be pretty low maintenance when it comes to kitchen gadget and appliances. My favorite appliance would probably be my Kitchen Aid mixer that has been with me since I got married 15 years ago. I don’t know what my favorite gadget might be; possibly my mini pans for baking yummy desserts in individual size portions.
Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?
Apple pie – it’s a recipe I have had since my 7th grade home economics class!
Is there any recipe and/or technique that we haven’t covered yet that you’d really like to make/learn?
Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Genre of music? Actor? Actress?
Pride and Prejudice would be my favorite book. Pride and Prejudice and Shawshank Redemption would be my favorite movies.
You’ve just won $5000.00!!! What would you spend it on?
If I were being good I’d stick it in our emergency fund! If I were bad I’d use it for a small vacation and then to buy some of the things on our wish list, like a rototiller for our garden and a truck canopy for my husband.
Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite.. why?
Fall: I love the autumn with the leaves, the smell of fireplaces in the air, the wind, and storms. We decorate our porch in a harvest theme and I love touring the local farms at that time of year.
Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?
I run, bike, hike, backpack, and camp. I also enjoy reading and gardening.
How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?
I started blogging when my son was about 5 months old so that would be about 3 years now. I started a separate blog about food in the last few months. I do like blogging. It is my outlet to the bigger world as a stay at home mom and it lets my let family know what is happening with us.
Is there one food that you seriously dislike/hate? If so, which is it and why?
I really have a hard time with onions. I have to say that I’ve only had raw onions in my house about 3 times in the last 15 years. I am trying to get better at incorporating them into my recipes, but a lot of times I just gloss over them and use an onion powder or dried minced onions.
What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?
I know it’s kind of a cliché, but roses are my favorite flower. They are so beautiful and smell heavenly.
Do you have a favorite local restaurant? If so, why is it your favorite and what kind of food is served there?
I love Calico Cupboard. Everything is made from scratch, they have the yummiest varieties of cinnamon rolls and giant cookies, and they seat you at wooden tables with wooden chairs or overstuffed arm chairs by the fireplace. They serve breakfast and lunch, they have yummy baked goods and desserts, soups, salads, and sandwiches, and breakfast entrees. Mmmmm, I want to go there right now.
Who taught you how to cook and/or bake?
My mom started us cooking and baking at a very young age. We had one day of the week where we were responsible to plan and cook the family’s dinner. I think I gravitate more toward baking because I love making food for people that they consider a treat.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Surfing the internet for recipes.
What kind of colors do you like? Pastels? Earth tones? Brights? Neons? Etc.
I like earth tones. At least I’m assuming I do since that is what I seem to gravitate toward and what our house is decorated in. Sometimes I wish I could do bright, bold colors but I’m just too timid to try.
If you had the choice of a free kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom makeover – which would you choose and why?
I think I would have to pick the living room. We just finished a one year remodel of our kitchen and before that was our bathroom so I think I have the kitchen and bathroom I would want. Our living room is in desperate need of a makeover. We have an old sectional sofa with a hide-a-bed that is just hanging on for dear life. I have wanted to replace it many times but my husband just suggests that we bring up his old bachelor furniture from the basement when I even mention it.
The Martha – Angel of Domestication or Minion of Evil? Why?
I don’t know enough about her to make that determination. I’ve gotten a few ideas from her but I don’t go seeking out her advice.
Do you watch any competitive cooking shows? Like Top Chef or Hell’s Kitchen? If so, which is your favorite and why?
We don’t watch a lot of television. Our guilty pleasure would probably be Biggest Loser. We did watch Hell’s Kitchen every now and then and thought is was interesting. I like watching the Food Network when I’m at a hotel that has cable. Iron chef is always fascinating to me but I don’t know if you’d consider that a competitive cooking show.
What’s your favorite “sweet” spice? How about your favorite “savory” spice?
I love cinnamon! I need to get better about spices. I don’t know enough about when to use spices for what unless the recipe tells me to put it in.
