Billy

Hi, my name is Billy and I am a food blogger from Sydney, the brainchild behind A Table For Two.
After working in advertising for so many years, I decided to jump the gun and started my own little adventure as a self employed web designer and photographer. That’s also when my food obsessions started – when you sick of the work, just walk into the kitchen and snack on whatever I can lay my hands on!
So I thought why not I blog about it too? And the rest is history.
How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?
I am very new to Daring Baker, only started since March 09. I used to be in another cooking challenge on another forum, until I discovered all those beautiful creations on Tarlette’s website for DB challenges. I am so glad I joined DB and now I am having so much fun creating new dessert and attempting recipes that I normally wouldn’t.
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?
My favorite gadget has to be my soft boiled egg contraption, it makes perfect fool-proof soft boiled egg every single time! And Kitchen appliance has to be my Empire Red KitchenAid, a birthday present from my partner. I called it the Ferrari, just love it when it hums way and makes whatever I put inside so soft and smooth.
Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?
I would say my vinegared pork ribs with hard boiled eggs is one my my signature dish. It is a very traditional Hokkien dish that I’ve learned from my mum. Whenever I cook this dish always makes me homesick and brings back lots of childhood memories.
Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Genre of music? Actor? Actress?
My favorite movie has to be Amelie. I love cracking the toffee on crème brulee just as much as Amelie. I even named my dog Amelie!
What is the ultimate comfort food to you?
Oat porridge with banana and honey, with a little smidgen of nutmeg and cinnamon. Bliss...
Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite.. why?
Have to admit I am not a summer person. I grew up in Malaysia and already had my fare share of torturing heat there. I like Spring breeze, Autumn leaves and Winter snow, except I have never seen snow falling from the sky in my life!
Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?
Photography, dining out with friends and road trip. Yes I love road trip, planning a big road trip to outback Australia end of this year, and hopefully doing the Route 66 mid next year! Yee haa!!!
How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?
I started my blog just over a year ago in July 2008 and absolutely had no idea what I was doing when I first started. I still don’t actually, but I just know I am having a hell lot of fun talking about food, day and night and share with everyone! There are so many posts that I like, but if I have to choose, it will have to be a 3part story about my recent food trip to Vietnam, WHICH I still haven’t finished!
Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?
I just came back from a whirlwind tour in South East Asia, eating my way around Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia. It was a blast! All the local food that I’ve never seen and tasted before are simply an eye opener, or should I say “mouth” opener. HA!
What did you eat for dinner last night? Did you prepare it or someone else?
I had some of the Boeuf Bourguignon leftovers from the day before last night actually, and it tasted even more amazing! All thanks to the other half, who spent whole day preparing it.
Do you watch any competitive cooking shows? Like Top Chef or Hell’s Kitchen? If so, which is your favorite and why?
Yes I do! I love Top Chef and Masterchef Australia! I liked it so much I even went for an audition and got into the 2nd round and then got booted out.... Booooo but that’s always next year
As Buzz Lightyear would say, “Never give up! Never Surrender!” LOL

Hi Billy! I am from Chicago and will be visiting Sydney, Melbourne and Port Douglas this month. Where's your favorite Sydney location for seafood? Not looking for fish and chips, as that is easy enough to find. Not looking for fine dining, either. We're not packing the right clothes for that. Anything in the middle is great! If you have any picks for Malasian food, I would appreciate that as well.
Thanks, and nice to meet you!
