Feasting on Art

Hello! I was educated as an art historian and went on to gain an MA in art business.

By day I work as an assistant at an art gallery here in Sydney while also doing projects as a freelance photographer. In my off time I work on my food blog, Feasting on Art. Doing all of the research about the artists and the food takes more time than I would like to admit but I really enjoy continuing to learn about art.

How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?

I just completed my third challenge with the Daring Kitchen. I am so pleased I joined because the community is absolutely fantastic. So many people so excited about the same recipes. I am inspired by the creativity found on this site and the numerous variations of the same dish.

What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?

My favorite gadget would be my mezzaluna. It just makes everything easier and quicker.

Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?

I would say one of my most memorable dishes would be the little penguins I made out of cream cheese, carrots, and olives. They are a pain to make but very cute.

Is there any recipe and/or technique that we haven’t covered yet that you’d really like to make/learn?

I would enjoy learning a bit more about creole cooking. I find the flavors very exciting.

What is the ultimate comfort food to you?

Growing up my mother always made me tomato soup. When I am feeling homesick I always make this

Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?

Other hobbies...surprise surprise I love photography and painting. I did several courses in fine art and I would describe myself as a dabbler. I also enjoy gardening although it is a bit hard living in a city. I used to help my mother out in her gardens growing up and recently have had some success growing lemon plants from a fruit I bought at the market.

How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?

I started blogging when I moved for London but at that time I only published a personal blog documenting my life abroad for family and friends back home. When I moved to Australia I was finally able to start Feasting on Art although the concept originated during my stay in London. I launched the blog three weeks after moving into my new flat in early April 2009. So far, my favorite post would have to be my strawberry shortcake recipe for the 4th of July because of the photographs (I was feeling particularly inspired).

Do you have a favorite local restaurant? If so, why is it your favorite and what kind of food is served there?

I am pretty new to Sydney and so I don’t feel like I have a very good handle on the restaurant scene but last week I went to Mojo’s Cafe & Tapas Bar in Bondi and I had the most delicious dish of grilled baby octopus. Luckily my partner does not eat seafood and I got to indulge in the entire plate.

Reading any good books lately? Which ones?!

I just started reading ‘The Art of Eating’ by M.F.K. Fisher, her prose is so beautiful. As you can imagine, anything with art and eating in the title is sure to be loved by me.

Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?

I would have to say Mexico City. The street food is absolutely incredible.

Aside from chocolate for most of us, do you have a food addiction?

I actually just wrote about my addiction to mustard for my blog post about palmiers. I used to hate it as a child (the yellow American kind) but once I discovered the seeded variation I developed an obsession. I actively seek out recipes that include mustard or mustard seeds.
