Today it’s all about one of nature’s best gifts: coconut water! If you’ve ever been lucky enough to experience the refreshing liquid that spills forth from a just-picked-from-the-tree fresh coconut, then you already know where the truly best coconut water is.
For those of us who don’t reside near a fruitful coconut palm though, we must rely on getting our coconut water fix from the local supermarket or grocery store. And that’s just fine, as there are plenty of wonderful coconut water brands out there to quench our thirsts!
We’ve gathered as many of the different coconut water brand options as we could find and are carefully evaluating and taste testing each. Which is the best coconut water that money can buy? You don’t need to be stranded on a desert isle to find out, just stick with us!
What is Coconut Water?
Coconut water is the liquid found inside young coconuts, also sometimes referred to as “green coconuts” due to their outer husk being pale green at this stage. As the coconut ages, this water is replaced by actual coconut meat and the outer husk turns brown.
Coconut water has an exceptionally refreshing taste and is prized as a delicious drink--straight from nature!
Is Coconut Water the Same as Coconut Milk?
Even though both coconut water and coconut milk are liquid forms of this beloved fruit (and you can actually use coconut water as a coconut milk substitute in some cases!) one must not confuse the two.
Coconut water is a clear and pure liquid while coconut milk is liquid which is blended with coconut meat, resulting in a thick, rich, milky concoction.

The Criteria
As we tasted and evaluated the products, we scored each coconut water according to 5 main criteria. From these grades, we calculated an overall average and used these scores to select our winners!
- Taste & Texture: considering the flavor and consistency of each coconut water in terms of sweetness, nuttiness, refreshment, and viscosity.
- Nutrition Content: taking into account the calorie, carb, and sugar contents of each coconut water as well as micronutrients and overall ingredient quality.
- Unique Characteristics: looking at special flavors, distinct qualities, or any other factor that makes one coconut water stand out from the others.
- Value: standardized to a price per ounce measure.
- Production & Packaging: the production methods used by each coconut water company, how readily available each product is in most areas, as well as any especially helpful or convenient features of packaging.
Best Pure Coconut Water: Zico Natural 100% Coconut Water
Size: 33.8 oz carton
Here is how Zico Natural 100% Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.3 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
While many coconut waters have some added sugar or other ingredients, there are several pure coconut water options that are free from anything except for the goodness of the fruit itself! Such is the case with Zico Natural 100% Coconut Water, whose only ingredient is, you guessed it, just coconut water.
Our tasting panel found this coconut water to have a nuttier flavor as compared to other brands, and overall rated it as “tasty and refreshing, with a moderate sweetness”. The fact that there are no added sugars means the carb count is nice and low here, with just 11 grams per serving. What you will find, however, is plenty of micronutrient benefits in the form of 10% your DV of phosphorus, 8% your DV of potassium, and smaller amounts of magnesium and calcium.
Zico sources its coconut water from coconuts which are hand-harvested as well as non-GMO project verified. If you needed any more convincing, this beverage is the official coconut water of the Olympic Games--what’s a better endorsement than that!
While we loved everything about the taste and manufacture of this coconut water, we weren’t huge fans of the coloring of this one. It’s actually completely natural for coconut water to take on a slightly pink hue (more on that later!) but the tint this drink has is a very strange semi-pink semi-brown coloring which is not all that appetizing.
Pros:
- Made with just 1 ingredient: pure coconut water!
- No added sugars = relatively low carb count.
- Taste is pleasantly nutty with just the right sweetness.
- Provides good quantities of several important vitamins and minerals.
- Made from hand-harvested and non-GMO coconuts.
- Endorsed by the Olympics.
Cons:
- Coloring is a very strange and unappealing pink-beige blend.
Best Organic Coconut Water: Coco Goods Organic Coconut Water

- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0

Coco Goods is cranking out all kinds of coconut-based products from coconut flour and coconut oil to coconut milk and this: their Organic Coconut Water! This crystal clear example of coconut water is not only beautiful in a way that leaves you anticipating the refreshment you’re about to receive, but it also has a pleasantly subtle flavor, nicely balanced somewhere between savory and sweet.
This company grows and harvests all of their fresh coconuts from a single source in Vietnam’s Ben Tre Province. They work closely with the local farmers and supply chain partners to ensure that values such as sustainability, social welfare, and environmentalism are upheld. As their motto goes, this is a serious “tree to table” operation!
This coconut water is made from coconuts which are certified USDA organic and non-GMO project verified, and the water itself is packed in a BPA-free tetra pak. In addition to running their operation on solar power, Coco Goods also runs an “All Good Promise” program, which vows to return 2.5% of each year’s profits to programs that directly benefit the local Vietnamese community and surrounding natural areas.
On the downside, this coconut water has one of the shortest shelf lives of all of those we tested, indicating it is best if used within 24 hours after opening. Thankfully, with taste this good, finishing up the 16.9 oz container before then should be no problem indeed!
Pros:
- Coconut water is refreshingly crystal clear.
- Taste is subtle and well balanced between sweet and savory.
- Made from single-source coconuts in Vietnam.
- USDA organic and non-GMO verified.
- Bottled in a BPA free tetra pak.
- Coco Goods goes the extra mile to support their employees, local community, and mitigate environmental impacts.
Cons:
- Best if used within 24 hours of opening--not much time!
Best Flavored Coconut Water: Vita Coco Peach Mango Coconut Water
Size: 16.9 oz carton
Here is how Vita Coco Peach Mango Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Plain coconut water is all well and good, but when your tongue is in the mood for something a bit more interesting, flavored coconut water is what you’re going to want to reach for!
We love the pale yellow-orange coloring of this Peach Mango Coconut Water from Vita Coco and the fact that it is made from just a few whole ingredients: coconut water, mango puree, peach puree, and a little boost of vitamin C! No artificial flavors or colors here, just real fruit purees.
As for the production itself, Vita Coco is yet another coconut water company that is doing a lot of good out there. From initiatives that support local farmers in taking up more sustainable farming practices to their “10 million seedling” project, there are many big picture reasons to reach for that bottle of Vita Coco.
And, this coconut water is not just good for the world, it’s actually pretty good for you too! This coconut water is free from GMOs and provides 30% your DV of vitamin C and 10% your DV of potassium, as well as some smaller amounts of calcium and magnesium.
Our tasting panel agreed that although the end result of this flavored coconut water is fairly tasty and refreshing, the different flavors actually don’t come through all that well. It actually tastes a bit too watered down and somehow not sweet enough, despite the inclusion of two types of fruit puree. But hey, you could always mix it with a splash of your own favorite mango juice to amp it up if you like!
Pros:
- Peach and mango give this coconut water an extra tropical flair.
- Is visually appealing with nicely bright, juicy coloring.
- Made from simple ingredients: just coconut water, fruit purees, and added vitamins.
- Company makes extra efforts in the areas of sustainability and outreach.
- Provides 30% of your DV of vitamin C plus other nutrients!
- GMO free.
Cons:
- Fruit flavors are not as pronounced as one might anticipate.
Best Budget Coconut Water: 365 Whole Foods Market Coconut Water
Size: 33.8 oz carton
Here is how 365 Whole Foods Market Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.3 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
Due to the limited growing region of the coconut palm, as well as the wellness hubbub that surrounds this product, coconut water can be surprisingly expensive. We happily pinned down a couple of options that defy high price tags, however, and this coconut water from Whole Foods Market in-house 365 Brand is our hands down favorite in the budget category.
At just $0.11 per ounce, not only is this coconut water the bottom line most affordable of all 14 varieties we evaluated, but it’s an excellently high quality product as well. This coconut water is not from concentrate, is non-GMO project verified, and provides 10% your DV of fluid balancing potassium. The rear panel of this big 1-liter carton features several creative ideas for what to do with your coconut water--aside from drinking it, of course!--and also bears an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label that indicates that the paperboard itself is responsibly sourced.
The flavor of this coconut water was unfortunately not a top scorer among our tasting panel. It has a bit more tang as opposed to that coconutty sweetness that you’d expect from a coconut water, and an overall bland flavor.
Also, this coconut water is pretty cloudy and murky, which although completely natural, is worth noting if you prefer your coconut water to look more like, well, water!
Pros:
- Just $3.79 for the large 1-liter carton--the cheapest of all!
- Not made from concentrate.
- Non-GMO project verified.
- Provides 10% DV potassium.
- Carton offers ideas for alternative ways to use and drink your coconut water.
- Packed in a carton made from responsibly sourced paperboard.
Cons:
- Not the best tasting--overall not as nutty and sweet as other coconut waters.
- Appearance is cloudy as opposed to clear.
Best Premium Coconut Water: Taste Nirvana Premium Coconut Water
Size: 9.5 oz bottle
Here is how Taste Nirvana Premium Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.2 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
It’s not every day you come across an award-winning product, but with this little bottle of Taste Nirvana Real Coconut Water, that’s exactly what we wound up with! This humble product won the Better Homes and Gardens ‘Best New Product Award’ when it hit the market back in 2013, and it’s been winning over coconut lovers ever since.
First things first: it boasts amazing flavor in the form of on-the-nose coconutty-ness as well as just the right amount of sweetness. This is likely due to the fact that it is made exclusively with Thai coconuts, as fruits from this region are thought to be among the sweetest! Our tasting panel loved the ever so slightly viscous consistency of this coconut water, which felt like it brought a lot of authenticity to the table.
We also love that this coconut water is packaged in a glass bottle as opposed to paperboard or plastic, like all of the other options we encountered. Glass is wonderful for re-use and is infinitely recyclable. Even better is that the plastic label has a perforated strip, making it easy to remove for proper recycling practice!
One thing we didn’t love is that the coconut flavor goes just a bit over the edge towards ‘fake’ tasting, if you know what we mean. One look at the ingredients label clarified this for us, as in addition to coconut water, it also contains something called “coconut essence”, which in our opinion gives it an aroma more akin to that of coconut scented beauty or home products.
And of course with the “Best Premium” designation, you can be sure that the price tag is not going to be your best friend here. This wee little 9.5-ounce bottle cost us nearly $4.00!
Pros:
- Winner of a “Best New Product” award!
- Decidedly coconutty with just the right balance of sweetness.
- Made from Thai coconuts--reportedly the best and sweetest.
- Texture is pleasantly just a bit thicker than other coconut waters.
- Bottled in glass with a tear away label for easy recycling.
Cons:
- Includes coconut essence, which makes the beverage taste just a bit fake.
- Very expensive, costing $.42 per ounce.
Most Unique Coconut Water: Goya Roasted Coconut Water
Size: 11.8 oz can
Here is how Goya Roasted Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.3 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
While there are plenty of pure, flavored, and all-natural coconut water products out there on the market, one particular variety stood out to us as an incredibly unique pick: this Roasted Coconut Water from authentic Latin food experts--Goya!
The roasted aspect of this coconut water is definitely something special, as it gives the whole drink the same subtle, toasted coconut taste you get from sprinkling toasted coconut flakes atop your bowl of yogurt or ice cream. There isn’t a ton of nutrient content in this coconut water but it does manage to provide 10% your DV of fluid balancing potassium, refreshing your cells as much as your taste buds!
We didn’t realize that “with coconut pulp” meant there would be big chunks of coconut meat floating around in the beverage, which reminded us of those tiny cubes of tofu you find in a cup of miso soup. But once we started sipping--and chewing--our way through the drink, the textural interest of those coconut pieces really grew on us! Drinking this coconut water is sort of like sipping on your favorite boba tea, and makes for an entirely fun and interesting experience.
Before you drink can after can of this Roasted Coconut Water though, know that it has the highest quantity of added sugars out of our test group. Each serving of this coconut water has 27 grams of sugar total, with 19 of these being added on top of the naturally occurring coconut sugars.
Therefore, depending on what kind of refreshments your palate is accustomed to, some folks might find the flavor of this one to be overly sweet.
Pros:
- From Latin grocery goods industry leader Goya.
- Inclusion of roasted coconut gives this beverage a special, toasted taste.
- Provides 10% DV of potassium.
- Contains actual pieces of coconut meat!
- Texture is wholly unique and interesting.
Cons:
- Very high in sugars, with 27 grams total per serving, 19 grams of which are added.
- Overall flavor might be too sweet to some taste buds.
Best Eco-Conscious Coconut Water: Harmless Harvest Organic Coconut Water
Size: 32 oz bottle
Here is how Harmless Harvest Organic Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.9 / 5.0
Coconut farming has a complicated, and often one-sided, relationship with issues of environmental and social welfare. Growers are often forced into making environmentally unfriendly choices in an effort to meet the massive demand for these products, and farmers are not always paid fairly for the dangerous work of coconut harvesting. Harmless Harvest is one company working to put a stop to all of that!
This coconut product company is, in their words, “serious about fair trade and social progress”, and they vow that fair wages are provided for all workers. In fact, this San Francisco based company has an entire crew on the ground in Thailand who work to ensure the values and standards the company was founded on are kept up in all stages of the coconut water production line.
This all natural coconut water is one crisp and refreshing drink, and our tasting panel agreed it was the best tasting coconut water of all those in our study. The beautiful pink color is a sign of antioxidant presence, as well as is a sign that this coconut water is in as natural a state as can be.
And, this drink is packed in a 100% recycled, BPA free plastic bottle! The outer label even zips off easily using a perforated strip so that you can go right ahead and recycle it again.
For as ‘harmless’ as this coconut water is in so many ways, it’s unfortunately going to do a bit of harm to your bank account, as this 32-ounce bottle costs a full $10.00. This was also the only coconut water we picked up which was in the refrigerated section as opposed to shelf stable. A sign of freshness to be sure, but also a bit of a pain that you need fridge space even before opening it for the first time.
It's also worth noting that this brand has more limited availability as compared to other coconut waters we evaluated, as it was only available in one of several grocery stores we visited.
Pros:
- Company stands for fair trade wages for all farmers and employees.
- Takes a hands on approach to ensure that social and environmental values are upheld.
- Best tasting coconut water of those we tried.
- Has a brilliant pink coloring which indicates antioxidant content and minimal processing!
- Packed in a recycled, BPA free bottle.
- Label removes easily for easy & proper recycling.
Cons:
- Expensive, costing $.31 per ounce.
- Is not shelf stable before opening, meaning it must be kept in the fridge even before opening.
- Not available in many grocery stores or markets.
Best Low-Sugar Coconut Water: Bai Antioxidant Molokai Coconut Cocofusion
Size: 18 oz bottle
Here is how Bai Antioxidant Molokai Coconut Cocofusion scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.2 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
There’s no confusion about it, this Coconut Cocofusion from Bai is one of the coolest coconut water beverages out there! Judging by its sweet, pina colada-like taste with a slight vanilla flavor, you’d think this drink was loaded with sugars. But actually, it’s almost sugar-free with just 1 gram per serving! It also features the lowest net carb count–at just 2 grams per serving, hello keto-friendly drink options!–as well as the lowest calorie content of 10 per serving.
Even better news is the fact that the folks at Bai are able to achieve all of this sweetness without any artificial sweeteners. This drink gets its sweet from erythritol and stevia and they are able to craft its good taste from coconut water concentrate and completely natural flavors.
In addition to providing 20% your DV of vitamin E, Molokai Coconut Cocofusion contains a boost of antioxidants from 2 sources: green coffee beans and coffeefruit. Plus, these ingredients will boost your energy levels as well, seeing as they impart a nice little 55 milligrams of caffeine into each serving (hint: this is about the same caffeine content as you’d find in a cup of green tea!)
Out of all of the coconut water products we tested though, this one is by far the most manufactured, as it contains a whole host of other ingredients aside from the coconut water itself. In fact, there is only 4% juice in this thing!
And while the alternative sweeteners do help to keep the carb count and glycemic impact of this drink nice and low, they have a distinct taste that some folks are averse to, so keep this in mind if alternative sweeteners are not your thing.
Pros:
- Flavor is sweet and rich!
- Very low in total sugars, net carbs, and total calories.
- Sweetened with natural alternative sweeteners erythritol and stevia--nothing artificial here.
- Provides 20% DV vitamin E per serving.
- Contains antioxidants.
- Offers a bit of energy-boosting caffeine!
Cons:
- Very processed, containing a number of refined and complex ingredients.
- Contains very little real juice.
- Alternative sweeteners may not be to the taste of all consumers.
Most Indulgent Coconut Water: Vita Coco Energy Chocolate Coconut Water
Size: 16.9 oz carton
Here is how Vita Coco Energy Chocolate Coconut Water scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.6 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.2 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
By now you likely know all about the health benefits of coconut water, but if you’re in the mood for something that hits more like a treat, there’s a coconut water for that too!
Vita Coco’s energy infused Chocolate Coconut Water might sound a bit weird, but trust us, it’s like chocolate milk and coconut water had a deliciously refreshing offspring. The flavor is coconutty with a hint of chocolate that is not at all heavy or bitter. A touch of coconut cream in the mixture adds a milky creaminess which makes it feel just a bit richer.
In addition to the satisfying taste and texture, this beverage also provides a little dose of tea-derived caffeine as well MCT oil–a coconut oil based product which is a source of quick fuel for the body and is also thought to help achieve that “satiated” feeling, thereby reducing food cravings.
This coconut water is also free from added sugars and delivers a ton of micronutrient benefit in the form of 25% your DV of several important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin B1, niacin, vitamin B6, and pantothenic acid.
Though we like the slightly creamy texture this coconut water has, the additional coconut fats and oils don’t exactly mix into the water completely and leave some solid bits floating around in the beverage. Not exactly an appetizing look!
And, what is indulgent in flavor and texture is often indulgent in fats and calories as well. This coconut water has the highest numbers of each, with 130 calories per serving and 8 full grams of saturated fats per serving. This is 40% your DV of saturated fat, just in one carton of coconut water! You’ll definitely want to consider the rest of your foods and beverages for the day before you indulge in this one.
Pros:
- Has a light and refreshing, yet creamy and flavorful chocolate-coconut flavor.
- Contains an energy boost in the form of caffeine and MCT oil.
- Inclusion of coconut cream + chocolate flavor make this very satiating.
- No added sugars.
- The most vitamin and mineral rich coconut water we tested.
Cons:
- Coconut cream and oils don’t fully mix in and result in a rather unappealing texture.
- High in calories.
- Very high in fats and saturated fats as compared to other coconut waters.
