Table of Contents
What are Frozen Burgers?
Unlike burgers made from fresh ground beef--which often require you to portion and shape them yourself--frozen hamburgers are pre-shaped, pre-packaged, and of course, fully frozen. This preparation method makes the patties suitable for long term storage in the freezer until you’re ready to cook them!
What Are Frozen Burgers Made Of?
The answer, of course, depends entirely on what type of frozen patty we’re talkin’ about! Frozen burgers made from ground beef are the most common, but you’ll also find that frozen patties made from chicken, poultry, and even seafood are widely available as well.

The Taste Test
For our frozen burger taste test, we fired up the gas grill and cooked each frozen hamburger patty according to package instructions for best results.
We did not opt to season the patties in any way before cooking, thereby allowing us to more accurately judge the level of seasoning inherent to each burger variety on its own.
The cooked patties were sampled plain by our tasting panel--no condiments, no toppings, no nothing!
The Criteria
Throughout the taste testing, research, and comparison phases of our review process, each product was given a score in each of 5 key criteria:
- Taste & Texture: the overall flavor of each frozen burger--especially as it compares to the flavor of fresh patties--as well as patty thickness and moisture level.
- Nutrition Content: specifically considering the calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, and protein contents as well as micronutrient value and overall quality of ingredients used.
- Unique Characteristics: including unique flavors, special ingredients, notable preparation styles, or any other factor that sets one frozen burger apart from the crowd.
- Value: calculated out to the price per patty, while also considering the size of the patties in question.
- Production & Packaging: where each frozen burger variety is made and distributed, how it is produced, and any noteworthy features--or lack thereof--of the packaging.
The criteria scores were then used to calculate an overall average grade for each frozen burger variety which served as the determining factor in selecting our final category winners!
Best Frozen 100% Beef Burgers:
Bubba Burger Original
Burger Size: ⅓ pound
Quantity per Box: 6
Here is how Bubba Burger Original scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.2 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
It’s no secret that Bubba Burgers are perhaps the most popular frozen burger brand out there on the market these days. After trying them for ourselves, we can definitely see why Bubba burgers are such a big deal!
Out of all the frozen beef patties we tried, the Bubba Original burgers were without a doubt the juiciest, most satisfying of all. They offer an excellent beefy flavor and the texture of the meat is finely ground and airy as opposed to coarse and tough like some of the other burger patties we tried. These flavorful burgers are made from 100% USDA choice beef chuck and when served with a thick slice of nutrient dense tomato, some leaf lettuce, and maybe a garlicky aioli or spicy mayonnaise--oh what a satisfying meal they make!
We love that Bubba Foods leaves their burgers irregularly shaped as opposed to perfect rounds or squares like most frozen patties, thereby giving them a rustic, more handcrafted vibe. There are no artificial ingredients, additives, or preservatives and each and every patty packs a whopping 25 grams of protein!
If all of that juice (in other words, fat!) that leaks out of these burgers is any clue, these frozen patties unfortunately truly suffer in the nutrition department. These burgers are the highest calorie of all we tested, coming in at 420 calories per patty and also pack a whopping 15 grams--75% your DV!--of saturated fat per serving.
Also, we found the on-box cooking instructions to be a bit vague as compared to other brands and varieties we tested. While it’s true that cook times can vary widely from one person’s grill or oven to another, we think more guidance is good especially when cooking raw beef from a frozen state.
Pros:
- Supremely juicy, thick, satisfying patties.
- Beef flavor is top notch and savory.
- Made from pure USDA choice chuck.
- Burgers have an irregular shape that gives a rustic flair.
- No artificial ingredients, additives, or preservatives.
- Provides 25 grams of protein per serving.
Cons:
- Very high in calories.
- Very high in saturated fats.
- Cooking instructions are a little too open ended--definitely could use some more detail.
Best Frozen Turkey Burgers: Butterball Original Seasoned Turkey Burgers
Burger Size: ⅓ pound
Quantity per Box: 6
Here is how Butterball Original Seasoned Turkey Burgers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Butterball’s packaging proudly states that they are “America’s #1 frozen turkey burger brand”, and we have to say, we agree with you, America!
Out of all of the frozen turkey burger brands we tested, we found their Original Seasoned Turkey Burgers to be superior in many different ways. First off, they offer nearly foolproof cooking as the burger cooked evenly with ease--no sticking to the grill or wondering what the heck is going on inside the patty, just predictable cooking from start to finish.
Despite being made with lean meat (as compared to more typical beef burgers) the turkey burger seeped tons of delicious juices as it cooked and we discovered it to be plenty moist and tender during the taste test. Our tasting panel also loved the complementary onion powder, brown sugar, salt, and yeast extract--a seasoning blend which resulted in excellent flavor without pushing this burger off the charts in terms of sodium content.
Each of these juicy patties offers an amazing 31 grams of protein per serving, meaning if you reach for one of these for lunch or dinner, you’ve made a massive dent in your protein goals for the day. The box also informs us that this product is American Humane certified and it even offers a tasty sounding recipe for BLT Turkey Burgers if you feel inclined to take these patties to the next level!
On the downside, there’s some highly processed ingredients in these turkey burgers like that umami-rich autolyzed yeast extract as well as hydrolyzed corn protein. Overall, it’s not the most processed frozen burger we encountered, but if you prefer to eat clean, this will likely not be your top pick.
In addition, we found the texture of this frozen burger to be not our favorite as it has a little bit of grit to it. If you’ve ever cooked with ground turkey before, you know this is at times an inherent characteristic of the product. Nevertheless, it lost some points in the texture department here.
Pros:
- Turkey patties cook very easily and evenly!
- Super juicy with a nice moisture content.
- Seasoned with just the right amount of onion powder, salt, and savory additions.
- Provides 31 grams of protein per patty.
- American Humane certified.
- Box features a fun recipe for BLT turkey burgers.
Cons:
- Contains a few highly processed ingredients.
- Texture of the ground turkey is a bit gritty.
Best Frozen Chicken Burgers: Bell & Evans Chicken Burgers
Burger Size: ¼ pound
Quantity per Box: 4
Here is how Bell & Evans Chicken Burgers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
If you’re of the mindset that nothing quite does it better than a piece of chicken, this next burger category is for you! Made from antibiotic-free, 100% air chilled chicken, Bell & Evans Chicken Burgers are just the ticket if you seek a more lightweight burger.
A lighter burger demands a lighter side and we think our Crispiest Baked Zucchini Chips are perfect for satisfying, without undoing all of the good your lean chicken burger is doing you! Each patty has just 8 grams of fat as opposed to the 20-30 grams featured in most of the beef burgers we tested.
Ready for even more good news? Bell & Evans started out as--and remains to be--a family owned and operated company that stands behind humanely raised livestock, animal welfare, and high quality business practices. Their premium chicken products are so good, they don’t need to do a lot of fussing with them, as shown by the super simple recipe of these plump frozen chicken patties. Made from just chicken, sea salt, and black pepper, they couldn’t get any more pure if you made them yourself!
The lack of fat content in these chicken burgers unfortunately makes them a grill master's nightmare, as we found them to be extremely prone to stickage. The on-box instructions did not include this tip, but we feel a light brushing of oil before tossing these patties on the grates might be a really helpful insurance policy here.
Also, though we love the purity of these chicken burgers, they are most definitely a bit bland. You’ll almost certainly want to (need to!) season these to your own taste with a sprinkling of salt, pepper, grill seasoning, or anything else you like.
Pros:
- Made with antibiotic-free, air-chilled chicken.
- Provides a more lightweight burger option, with just 8 grams of fat.
- Pairs nicely with lightweight sides like salads and vegetables!
- From a family owned and operated company.
- Produced according to animal welfare and quality standards.
- Contains just 3 pure ingredients!
Cons:
- Easily sticks to the grill or pan during cooking.
- Taste is a bit bland, you’ll need to come up with your own seasoning here!
Best Frozen Seafood Burgers: Good Neighbor Seafood Co. Original Shrimp Burger
Burger Size: ¼ pound
Quantity per Box: 2
Here is how Good Neighbor Seafood Co. Original Shrimp Burger scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.1 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.1 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
For all you pescatarians out there--or folks who simply don’t care for meat and/or poultry--yes, you can still participate in burger night as there are actually many frozen seafood burger options to be found in your grocer’s seafood department!
This Shrimp Burger from Good Neighbor Seafood Co. is made with sustainably sourced shrimp plus a slew of flavorful veggies and seasonings like crunchy celery, sweet red bell peppers, green onions, wine, punchy garlic, plenty of black pepper, and just the right amount of fragrant rosemary extract. Our tasting panel loved the unique approach this product takes towards burger-dom, as it sort of blurs the lines between seafood salad, crab cake, and burger patty.
Oh, and did we mention just how healthy this burger is? It hits the charts at just 120 calories per patty--the lowest of all burgers we tested, as well as the lowest overall fat and saturated fat totals with just 3 grams and 1.5 grams respectively.
As with most seafood products, this choice is quite pricey, hitting the bank account at $7.00 per box of just two patties. These patties are also surprisingly high in cholesterol, with each patty containing 110 milligrams or about 40% your DV of the stuff!
Our tasting panel also had a few complaints about the taste and texture of these burgers. While the sweetness of the shrimp and the aromatic flavors of all of those veggies and herbs paired nicely together, the fact is, there is a certain richness missing from these burgers.
They don’t exactly hit the same textural note as you’d expect from biting into a burger sandwiched between two bun halves. Also, these patties are an allergen nightmare as on top of the rather obvious shellfish alert, they also contain milk, eggs and wheat/gluten ingredients.
Pros:
- Made from sustainably sourced shrimp.
- Contains a tasty mix of fresh vegetables, herbs, and seasonings.
- Wins major points as a super unique burger option!
- Can be cooked from either frozen or thawed.
- Lowest in calories, fats, and saturated fat of all the burgers we tested.
Cons:
- Very expensive, each shrimp burger costs $3.50.
- High in cholesterol.
- Not as well seasoned or textured as you’d like from a burger.
- Contains many different food allergens.
Best Eco-Conscious Frozen Burgers: The Organic Meat Co. Organic Grass Fed Beef Burgers
Burger Size: ¼ pound
Quantity per Box: 4
Here is how The Organic Meat Co. Organic Grass Fed Beef Burgers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics 5.0 / 5.0:
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
It’s unfortunately all too well known that the meat and livestock industry is far from an environmentally friendly one. However, you can still eat meat and support sustainability with eco-conscious choices from companies like The Organic Meat Co.
Their Organic Grass Fed Beef Burgers contain nothing but organic beef from grass fed cows supplemented with organic, all vegetarian feed. The cattle live freely with unrestricted access to organic outdoors pasture and are never given antibiotics or hormones.
The patties themselves have plenty of natural juices and a rich, beefy flavor that really stands up to punchy side dishes like our Smashed Brussels Sprouts. They are low in calories with just 220 per serving and feature the lowest sodium content of all beef burgers we tested-- a mere 55 milligrams per serving! They are preservative free, casein free, and have the lowest saturated fat level of all beef burgers we tested with just 6 grams in each patty.
In addition to being USDA certified organic and non-GMO project verified, this product is also carbon neutral product certified meaning that for as many carbon emissions as their processing produces, an equal or greater amount is offset by carbon reduction projects.
When it comes time to cook, you’ll need to be careful however as the fact that these are thinner patties means that they can dry out incredibly quickly. Seeing as these burgers cost $2.50 apiece, ruining them is certainly not going to be on your to-do list!
Pros:
- Made from 100% beef.
- Certified USDA organic and non-GMO project verified.
- Cattle are pasture raised, grass fed, and given organic feed.
- Flavor is rich, beefy, and juicy.
- Low in calories, sodium, and saturated fats.
- Free from preservatives and casein.
- Certified carbon neutral.
Cons:
- Patties are very thin, making them prone to overcooking.
- Expensive: each box of 4 patties is about $10.00.

Burger Size: ¼ pound
Quantity per Box: 8
Here is how Philly Gourmet 100% Pure Beef Frozen Patties scored in each of our criteria categories:

- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.3 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.4 / 5.0

No doubt about it, meat is expensive. Dropping $10-$15 on a modest box of frozen burgers is not always feasible for many folks, and not exactly the best way to make your dollar go a distance.
These pure beef patties from Philly Gourmet solve those worries though, as for just shy of 10 bucks you have yourself EIGHT thick and juicy patties. This works out to $1.20 per serving--the most economical choice of all the frozen burgers we encountered.
During the taste test, we found these burgers to cook quite nicely, pooling rich juices on their surface as they grilled, also taking on a wonderfully crisp exterior. Each quarter-pound burger is super rich in protein, providing 29 grams of it, as well as 15% your DV of blood-cell-supporting iron!
We love that these burgers are free from any junk or additives and that their basic flavor makes them the perfect blank canvas for your favorite cheeses, special sauces, or richly flavored vegetables like our Balsamic Soy Roasted Garlic Mushrooms. The on-box cooking instructions are also nicely thorough, with detailed directions for skillet frying, oven broiling, and gas and/or charcoal grilling methods.
Our biggest complaint with these frozen burgers comes down to an issue of texture. Though these were not the only burgers we tested that are made from ground chuck, they were definitely the toughest and most grizzly, with some bites that were quite tough to chew.
Also, when pulling these patties from their packaging, we found them ridiculously tough to separate. What’s a foodie got to do to get an individually vacuum sealed burger around here!
Pros:
- Lowest price point of all frozen burgers we tested, just $1.20 per burger.
- Patties are thick and hefty.
- Cooks nicely and evenly, creating plenty of juices as it does so.
- Each burger has 29 grams protein and 15% DV of iron.
- Straightforward flavor pairs nicely with toppings or sides.
- Packaging provides thorough instructions for a range of cooking methods.
Cons:
- Texture is chewy and grizzly--overall not very pleasant.
- Burger patties are tough to separate in the package.
Best Frozen Pre-Cooked Burgers: Ball Park Fully Cooked Flame Grilled Beef Patties
Burger Size: 2.7-ounce (cooked)
Quantity per Bag: 6
Here is how Ball Park Fully Cooked Flame Grilled Beef Patties scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
If you don’t have the time to cook frozen burgers made from raw meat or poultry, there are thankfully a few pre cooked patty options out there! Ball Park--a brand more typically associated with hot dog links--further strengthens their foothold on the cookout crown with their Fully Cooked Flame Grilled Beef Patties.
The fact that these frozen burgers are fully cooked makes your meal all that much closer as all you have to worry about here is heating them thoroughly, a task you can accomplish via the grill, a skillet, your oven, and yes--even the microwave!
Our tasting panel was definitely a bit skeptical about these pre-cooked, pre-grilled burgers, but we have to say we were pleasantly surprised at the flavor. They are tasty, savory, and offer plenty of charred surface area giving off that unmistakable “grill flavor”, even if you opt to reheat them with a different cooking method.
As opposed to all of the other frozen burgers we tested which came packed in cardboard boxes, these patties come in a resealable zipper pack, making them super convenient to store. And, there are no artificial flavors or colors!
Unfortunately, there is plenty of other artificial stuff going on in these burgers though as they are loaded up with processed ingredients. On the list of offenders we spied partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn syrup, maltodextrin, modified food starch, and encapsulated salt. Also, these burgers have the lowest protein content of all the burgers we tested coming in at just 13 grams per patty.
It's also important to note that you might have a hard time getting your hands on a bag of these! We came up empty handed at several of our local grocery stores before finally scoring at a bag.
Pros:
- Burgers are fully cooked--just heat and eat!
- Very versatile in terms of cooking method as you can even heat them in the microwave.
- Flavor is nicely savory with a notably “grilled” flavor and aroma.
- Packed in a resealable zipper bag for easy storage.
- No artificial flavors or colors.
Cons:
- Contains lots of highly processed ingredients.
- Not the most readily available in all areas.

- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0

From bacon & cheddar to steakhouse seasoned, we encountered all types of flavored frozen burgers during the shopping phase of our burger bash. Our favorite of them all: the Jalapeno Beef Patties brought to you by none other than Target’s Good & Gather brand.
These frozen burgers were a standout favorite among our tasting panel, not only for the excitement of their spice level but also for the fact that the meat itself is super rich, juicy, and has an excellent beefy flavor. Each thick burger patty has plenty of minced fresh jalapeno peppers dotted throughout the mixture, complemented perfectly by other additions like dried garlic, bell pepper, onion, dried cilantro, and just the right hint of natural smoke flavoring.
These burgers offer one of the most impressive micronutrient profiles we encountered as each and every patty provides 40% your DV of vitamin A, 20% your DV of vitamin C, 20% your DV of iron, and a wee dose of calcium. As with most products from this superstore, these burgers come with the “Good & Gather Promise”--a 100% satisfaction or your money back guarantee.
On the downside, the cooking instructions that accompany this box of burgers is pretty minimal, offering directions for stove top cooking only--no tips for grilling or broiling here!
Keep in mind also that these frozen burgers run a bit stealthy on the spice level, meaning they might be too much for little ones or otherwise sensitive taste buds. If you were to compare these burgers to a store bought salsa, we’d score them as a solid medium!
Pros:
- Our tasting panels top fave!
- Beef is rich, juicy, and perfectly textured.
- Perfectly seasoned with plenty of jalapeno, spices, herbs, and smoke flavor.
- Excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron.
- Comes with a money back guarantee.
Cons:
- Cooking instructions are limited, with details only for stove top cooking.
- Definitely pack some heat and might be too piquant for some folks.
Best Frozen Burger FAQs
Do You Need to Thaw Frozen Burger Patties Before Cooking?
Nope! Most brand packaging actually specifically recommends that you don’t thaw frozen burgers before cooking. Like most frozen foods, there are some inherent food safety concerns that creep up during the defrosting process, therefore it’s best to stick with the manufacturer’s instructions here.
Most frozen burgers are made to go straight from frozen to cooked. Just place the frozen hamburgers directly on the grill grate if you plan to grill your burgers, into the skillet if cooking on the stovetop, or on a baking sheet if broiling in the oven.
Should You Season Frozen Burgers Before Cooking?
One thing you can do with your frozen burgers before cooking them, however, is season them!
Before adding anything, be sure to consult the ingredients list of your package of frozen burgers to check for salt content and any other ingredients. As we covered in our featured products above, many frozen burger patties already contain sodium, sometimes in significant levels so you want to check before adding more salt or a salted seasoning blend to these.
To jazz up your frozen burgers before cooking, try a sprinkle of garlic powder, chili powder, dried Italian herbs, or even a dusting of smoky cumin or ground coriander.
What’s the Best Cooking Method For Frozen Burgers?
Cooking frozen burgers could not be easier--nor more flexible! All of the frozen burgers we encountered thankfully had on-box cooking instructions, typically in a range of methods like grilling (either on a gas grill, charcoal grill, or an indoor grill!), broiling, pan frying, or even microwaving!
In our experience, most frozen burger varieties indicate that they are best experienced by grilling or pan frying, as this results in the best chance of achieving that crispy-on-the-outside yet juicy-on-the-inside juxtaposition.
Most folks would agree though, that you should not cook frozen hamburger patties in the microwave as the result will undoubtedly be rubbery, dry, and tough.
Can You Cook Frozen Burgers in an Air Fryer?
Yes, cooking frozen burgers in an air fryer is a relatively new option but is proving to be successful! Some of the burger brands and varieties we tested actually offered air fryer cooking instructions along with the other more typical methods.
If your brand doesn’t, a good starting point is this: arrange the frozen burgers in a single layer in the air fryer basket, then cook at 350℉ for 8-10 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads an internal temperature of 165℉.
Ranking the Best Frozen Burgers: The Takeaway
With any of these best frozen burgers, getting a tasty, juicy burger onto your plate is closer than you might think! You can choose a frozen burger made from beef, poultry, or seafood--or opt for specially flavored options or plain. You can grill frozen burgers or stay inside and skillet fry or broil them.
If having the convenience of frozen burgers at the ready frees up your culinary ambition in another direction, put your own French fry cutter to the test and whip up a pile of fries to serve alongside! When the burgers and fries at home are this good (and easy!), drive-thru meals are sure to be a thing of the past.
