Among breakfast options, waffles are a crowd favorite! The sweet-savory batter, crunchy exterior, and of course those cubic pockets that are perfectly suited to hold mini pools of your favorite toppings.
The problem is, these treats take so darn long to make and require a special appliance to do so. Thankfully, there are plenty of waffle-making folks out there, turning out big quantities of these checkered discs and conveniently delivering them to the freezer aisle of your local grocery!
We thought it was about time that we taste tested frozen waffles of all types so as to give you the inside scoop on which are the best frozen waffles money can buy. Let's go!
What is a Frozen Waffle?

Exactly where and how waffles originated is still up for debate, though we know they come with a long history in places like Belgium and the Netherlands.
As frozen and convenience foods came about in the late 1940’s and early 50’s, frozen versions of this favorite food item made their appearance at juuuust the right time. No longer was making waffles something you needed to wait for a lazy weekend morning for, but suddenly, the waffle had a place on the list of quick breakfast items!
Types of Frozen Waffles
Though most frozen waffles have a common base of flour, sugar, and egg ingredients, there are now a near countless number of frozen waffles out there. One look through the freezer section and you're bound to come across traditional waffles, multigrain waffles, buttermilk waffles, flavored versions such as cinnamon or vanilla waffles, frozen waffles with mix-ins like chocolate chips or blueberries, and even Belgian-style waffles.
In addition, today more than ever there are additional varieties of waffles that are suited to meet different dietary restrictions such as vegan, keto, or gluten-free waffles.

- Best Mini Frozen Waffles
The Taste Test
For the taste test, we heated each waffle type according to its pertinent package directions and gave them each a try plain, as well as with the classic topping combo: butter and maple syrup.
The Criteria
To determine it’s placement, every frozen waffle was given a score in each of the 5 following criteria:
- Taste & Texture: the flavor of each waffle as well as the post-toasting consistency--we’re looking for crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior here!
- Nutrition Content: taking into consideration the number of carbs/fats/protein in each waffle as well as dietary fiber, sugar, sodium, any vitamins/minerals provided and the overall quality of ingredients used.
- Value: seeing as we’re comparing waffles of many different types and sizes here, we opted to compare their value in terms of a price-per-serving figure.
- Convenience: since frozen waffles are a go to food item when you don’t have time to break out your favorite waffle maker and cook up an entire breakfast, convenience of preparation and packaging is key.
- Unique Characteristics: such as a special flavor, uncommon ingredient, unique details about the company, or especially helpful elements of production.
Best Classic Frozen Waffles: Kellogg's Eggo Homestyle Waffles
Count: 10 waffles per box
Here is how Kellogg's Eggo Homestyle Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.4 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.9 / 5.0
- Convenience: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.4 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
If you’re looking for a waffle that will make you feel like a kid again, it doesn’t get any better than Eggo Homestyle Waffles. It’s undisputed that Eggo is the most well-known frozen waffle brand out there, and for good reason: they also happened to be the first on the frozen waffle scene in 1953!
These traditional waffles from Eggo offer the best classic waffle experience, getting nice and crunchy on the outside while still remaining unbeatably moist on the inside. Each box comes with 10 waffles inside, a big jump from the usual 8 or even 6 waffles that were in most other boxes we tested. Eggos are proudly baked in the USA and this was the only variety to feature a resealable bag inside the exterior carton. If you’ve ever tried to eat a freezer burned toasted waffle before, you know what a game changer this is
We were also pleasantly surprised with the nutritional profile of these waffles. Eggo waffles are certainly known to be quite processed, so we admit our expectations were not all that high. However, these feature the lowest calorie content with just 90 per waffle, as well as the lowest fat content with just 2.5 grams per waffle! They also have impressive vitamin and mineral content, delivering 20% DV calcium, 20% DV iron, 20% DV vitamin A, 10% DV riboflavin, 15% DV niacin, 10% vitamin B6, 20% DV folate, 10% DV vitamin B12, and 15% DV phosphorus. Wow!
For all of that goodness tucked inside these toaster waffles, they unfortunately have quite a sad appearance when compared with the other waffles we evaluated. Kellogg's Eggo Homestyle Waffles are pretty flat, have a sallow coloring which did not even improve very much with toasting, and are overall pretty messy and uneven looking.
As mentioned above, these waffles are on the more processed end of things and we have to be honest, they certainly taste like it. There’s no mistaking these waffles for homemade! Also, the back of the box mentions there are bioengineered food ingredients in the product--another tally for the “highly processed” column.
Pros:
- Offers the most classic toaster waffle experience, toasty on the outside and moist inside.
- Box is packed with 10 waffles.
- Baked in the USA.
- The waffles come in a resealable bag inside their box.
- Low in calories and fat as compared to other waffles.
- Features excellent nutrient content, with 20% DV of many vitamins and minerals and smaller amounts of several others.
Cons:
- Not the best looking, as the waffles have a pale yellow color, thin profile, and are overall pretty unevenly shaped.
- The flavor is fairly processed as compared to other frozen waffles.
- Contains bioengineered ingredients.
Best Organic Frozen Waffles: Nature's Path Organic Gluten Free Buckwheat Wildberry Waffles
Count: 6 waffles per box
Here is how Nature's Path Organic Gluten Free Buckwheat Wildberry Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Convenience: 4.4 / 4.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
We get it, a product that loudly proclaims “buckwheat” right in the title doesn’t exactly conjure up expectations of deliciousness. Don’t let this dissuade you from giving these waffles a shot though, as in our book, these Gluten Free Buckwheat Wildberry Waffles from Nature’s Path were among some of the tastiest!
Brown rice flour, tapioca starch, potato starch, corn flour, and yes, that statement-making buckwheat flour come together to produce hearty yet easy-to-eat multigrain waffles that take on a nice toasty color as they cook. These waffles have just the right level of sweetness in part thanks to the batter itself, but also as a result of those delicious little berry flavored bits that are speckled throughout each waffle.
In addition to being USDA certified organic by Quality Assurance International, these waffles are also certified gluten free, completely vegan, and backed by a quality guarantee! We love that a serving of these waffles provides 11 grams of whole grains, which is over 20% your recommended daily intake, as well as 280 milligrams of heart healthy ALA omega-3 fatty acid.
Our biggest complaint with these waffles is in regard to their texture. They definitely were a bit messy and crumbly, so we can’t see them being as ideal for taking on the go. On a related note, the crumb complaint points to the fact that the textural experience overall is rather dry. We could see these becoming easily overcooked so take care when toasting!
We were also a little thrown by the cooking instruction ”for best results allow waffles to thaw slightly before toasting.” We obeyed, even though no other package of waffles instructed us to do this, but we can’t say we noticed it gave any benefit to the end result. If anything, it may have contributed to their dry consistency.
Pros:
- One of the best tasting waffles of the whole review, with a hearty flavor and nice sweetness thanks to the berries.
- Waffles take on an attractive toasty coloring as they cook.
- USDA organic certified by QAI.
- Certified gluten free and vegan.
- Provides excellent quantities of whole grains and ALA omega-3’s.
Cons:
- Overall are quite messy and crumbly, not great for breakfast on the run.
- Have a pretty dry, crunchy texture which is not the most pleasant to eat.
- Came with odd toasting instructions which did not seem to cook the waffles very well.
Best Frozen Waffles With Protein: Kodiak Protein-Packed Homestead Style Power Waffles
Count: 8 waffles per box
Here is how Kodiak Protein-Packed Homestead Style Power Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.0 / 5.0
- Convenience: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
As their box clearly states, Kodiak focuses their efforts on “restoring the real food tradition”, and we think their Protein-Packed Homestead Style Power Waffles are an example of just that!
The ingredients list features all easy-to-understand, whole food ingredients such as whole grain wheat flour, whole grain oat flour, whey protein, egg whites, wheat gluten, and dry milk. The combination of these healthy components results in a deeply satisfying waffle that is visibly thicker and more dense than other waffles we tried.
Upon biting into them, we found their texture to be super fluffy and the flavor, oh boy, just slightly sweet and pleasantly savory--almost like a freshly baked batch of skillet cornbread! A pat of butter made our short stack of waffles near impossible to resist demolishing.
And let’s not forget the reason behind these waffles’ win in this category: their protein content! Each and every waffle provides 6 grams of protein, and they are made with 100% whole grains. We are also a huge fan of their packaging and branding, as their 100% recycled paper box gives a rustic appeal and their UPC label is even in the shape of a bear! A nod towards the fact that every Kodiak purchases fund efforts to protect grizzly bear populations and wildlife habitats.
Our box of waffles had several disfigured or “incomplete” waffles in the mix though. It was as if they didn’t fill the waffle irons enough and some of the edges were missing. Another point for the rustic vibes but hey, we paid for whole waffles and we’d like whole waffles please!
Speaking of getting bang for your buck, this was also one of the most expensive boxes of waffles that made it into our shopping cart, setting us back almost $6.00 for the box, or as it works out in the math, $1.45 per each 2-waffle serving.
Pros:
- Contains real, whole food ingredients--nothing overly processed here!
- Made with 100% whole grains.
- Waffles are thick and hearty, with a very satisfying bite.
- Top of the charts in the flavor department with a sweet but very savory flavor.
- Each waffle provides 6 grams of protein--the highest we found.
- Packaging is super appealing and made from 100% recycled paper.
- Some proceeds of Kodiak sales go to wildlife conservation efforts.
Cons:
- Several waffles in the box hadn’t cooked properly and were missing edges or not filled out.
- One of the most expensive waffles we tested, costing almost $1.50 per serving.
Best Gluten Free Frozen Waffles: Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles
Count: 6 waffles per box
Here is how Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Convenience: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Van’s got its start in 1968 making health-oriented frozen foods like protein pancakes and various gluten free offerings. The tradition continues to this day and their Gluten Free Original Waffles are a shining example of exactly what this company does best!
Like other gluten free food products, these whole grain waffles are made up of a blend of different flours including brown rice, potato starch, white rice, and soy flours. They are lightly sweetened with pineapple and pear juices, giving these waffles a delicate yet delicious flavor. We love their lightweight consistency and, for a product free from stabilizing gluten, they have a surprisingly good texture that holds together nicely.
The nutritional makeup of these waffles is another nicety as well, as each serving of these waffles provides 22 grams of whole grains, 15% DV calcium, 6% DV iron, and has <1 gram of sugars! In addition to being non-GMO project verified, these waffles are completely free from high fructose corn syrup, dairy ingredients, eggs, corn ingredients, cholesterol, and artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.
On the downside, these waffles take on a bit of a funny flavor and gritty consistency due to the rice flour, according to our tasters. They are also quite pale and we struggled to get them adequately crisp in the toaster. After applying the 2 rounds of toasting as per the package directions, each gluten free waffle was still quite soggy so we ended up needing to give them a third round.
It’s also worth noting that these waffles are noticeably smaller in diameter as compared to the others. Not a big problem, but enough of a size difference that it might leave you craving a third waffle!
Pros:
- Certified gluten free.
- Made of a blend of many different whole grain flours and starches.
- Naturally sweetened with fruit juices.
- Have a lightweight consistency and good structure.
- Rich source of whole grains, calcium, and iron as well as very low in sugar content.
- Non-GMO verified and free from items such as eggs, corn, and artificial ingredients.
Cons:
- The large proportion of rice flour gives these waffles a noticeably different taste and texture as compared to traditional waffles.
- Have a pretty pale coloring and their makeup does not take well to being toasted--you might need to toast longer or at a higher temperature than is recommended!
- Are slightly smaller in size than the other waffle varieties.
Best Flavored Frozen Waffles: Kellogg's Eggo Grab & Go Buttery Maple Liege-Style Waffles
Count: 4 waffles per box
Here is how Kellogg's Eggo Grab & Go Buttery Maple Liege-Style Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.6 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.3 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Convenience: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Let’s go Eggo! Sure they may already have won one of our other categories, but this particular iteration of theirs came up on top as well, for a few important reasons. Liege-style waffles are unique in the sense that they are made with a yeasted batter like brioche, giving them a rich and fluffy texture.
In addition, this type of waffle is a traditional Belgian street food meaning if there was ever a waffle meant to eat while on the move, this is it! Part of the genius of these Liege-Style Waffles from Eggo is in the fact that they already have a buttery taste, punctuated by maple flavor and a pleasant crunch of delicate pockets of pearl sugar. In short, this waffle has all of your key toppings already mixed in.
Inside the 100% recycled paperboard box there are 4 individually wrapped waffles, offering the utmost convenience. And, you don’t even have to toast these waffles. Unlike most frozen foods which need to be cooked before consumption, these waffles can be thawed and eaten as is--great news for school lunches or hiking snacks!
For the sake of science we tasted the waffles in both cooked and uncooked form, as the packaging offered instructions for enjoying the waffles both ways. Eating them uncooked was no problem (although we can't lie, we missed the warm toastiness you come to expect from a waffle!) but unfortunately, these Buttery Maple Liege-Style Waffles don’t take all that well to toasting. They had a tendency to burn but at the same time not get very crisp, and the waffles are so dense it took a long time for the centers to warm through.
And, as you probably can guess from their super buttery taste, these waffles are far from the healthiest on the market. Each fairly small waffle has 13 grams of sugar and 6 grams of saturated fats--30% your DV! These waffles are also extremely low in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, with just token quantities of calcium and iron.
Pros:
- Liege-style waffles have a rich texture and tasty buttery maple flavor
- No need for toppings here, the butter is in the batter as well as unique flecks of pearl sugar speckled throughout.
- 100% recycled paperboard box.
- Each waffle is individually wrapped.
- Can be eaten warm or hot--no toasting required! Simply thaw and eat, if desired.
Cons:
- If you prefer to warm them, they tend to burn around the edges before becoming crisp and warm all the way through.
- Contain very high levels of sugars and saturated fats.
- Minimal nutrition content, with almost nonexistent levels of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Most Nutritious Frozen Waffles: Kashi Go Wild Blueberry Protein Waffles
Count: 8 waffles per box
Here is how Kashi Go Wild Blueberry Protein Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.7 / 5.0
- Convenience: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0

No matter how tasty they may be, it’s important for a waffle to be good for ya, too! Especially when eaten for breakfast, you may be counting on that waffle to start your day off on the right foot.
Kashi Go Wild Blueberry Protein Waffles can help you do just that, with their super healthful combo of whole food ingredients like whole wheat flour, soy flour, protein-rich egg whites, sweet wild blueberries, organic whey protein, and fragrant lemon peel. We could honestly catch a whiff of their intriguing lemony blueberry-y aroma before even opening the box and were stoked when we finally got to dig into these.
These blueberry waffles--made with real blueberries we might add--are made from 100% whole grains, use cage-free eggs, and are non-GMO project verified. Each serving provides 13 grams of protein plus 10% DV iron, 20% DV phosphorous, 10% DV magnesium, 8% DV potassium, and 4% DV calcium! And, they’re packed in a 100% recycled cardboard carton to boot.
Though we loved their taste, the texture on these waffles was not a huge winner, coming up a bit dry on the inside but at the same time quickly becoming soggy after toasting. They also didn’t toast very evenly and they ended up with an appearance and consistency that was not the most uniform.
And, folks with allergies take note: these waffles come with a long list of allergen ingredients including: wheat, soy, egg, and milk products.
Pros:
- Made of whole food ingredients, no artificial preservatives or extraneous processing.
- Have a subtly fruity blueberry flavor and super fragrant aroma!
- Made with 100% whole grains and cage-free eggs.
- Non-GMO.
- Each serving provides a ton of protein and various vitamins and minerals like iron, potassium, and magnesium.
Cons:
- Texture is a bit dry and waffles did not hold their toasty exterior for long after cooking.
- Experienced pretty uneven toasting.
- Have several different allergen ingredients including eggs and soy.

Inside the box, there are 2 individually wrapped packages each containing 3 waffles, which is especially nice for keeping the waffles fresher for longer. The waffles have a rustic appeal with a swirly batter and honestly, you could put these up at brunch and trick the crowd into thinking you made them yourself.
Despite all of this quality, these waffles still manage to be the most affordable, costing us just $0.62 per serving and they are backed by a money back guarantee! Hungry for more? A scannable QR code on the side panel takes you to a webpage with complete food information, details about Culinary Tours, and more!
One thing we were confused by is the cooking instructions on this package of waffles. It explicitly says not to thaw the waffles before toasting but then also offers instructions for how to cook waffles that are thawed. Confusing!
They’re also not nutrient dense by any means, as their token micronutrient is just 1.5 milligrams (8% DV) of iron.
Pros:
- Taste just like homemade waffles and are nicely crispy on the outside with a perfectly fluffy texture inside!
- Flavor is a nice balance between sweet and savory, lending these waffles to a number of uses.
- Box contains 2 separate sealed bags of 3 waffles, to maximize freshness.
- Waffles have an appetizing appeal with a beautiful swirled batter.
- Most economical frozen waffles we evaluated!
- Come with a money back quality guarantee.
- Scannable QR code on the box gives you even more product info.
Cons:
- Cooking instructions are unclear and contradictory.
- Lacking in any added nutrients or health benefits and the only mineral they contain is a small amount of iron.
Best Mini Frozen Waffles: 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Homestyle Mini Waffles
Count: 8 sets of 4 mini waffles per box
Here is how 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Homestyle Mini Waffles scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.6 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0

- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
Mini waffles aren’t just for kids! Though small in stature, these waffles from 365 Whole Foods Market store brand are big on flavor. Made from a base of whole wheat flour and wheat bran, these waffles are then lightly sweetened with organic cane sugar and organic pear juice concentrate.
We found their hearty texture and slight chewiness to actually be quite pleasant and they develop a perfect crispy exterior when toasted. We love how the waffles are attached to one another in groups of 4 so if you prefer to enjoy them as a unit (more like a whole, regular sized waffle,) you may do so, or break them up into individuals for easy snacking or of course, sharing with the kiddos.
These Organic Homestyle Waffles provide one of the highest fiber counts we found, with 4 full grams per serving. And, they are USDA certified organic, non-GMO project verified, and completely vegan! The recycled box features instructions for how to make the decadent looking topped mini waffles they show on the front which feature raspberry jam, but we bet one of your favorite strawberry jams would do nicely as well.
For everything we loved about these mini waffles, we had some unfortunate troubles with their shape. For one thing, they did not separate easily from one another, giving the mini waffles a pretty rough appearance. Also, each set of mini waffles had some thin bits of waffle batter in the middle and along the edges which quickly burned in the toaster and had to be removed.
And, the mini size of these waffles is in direct opposition to their calorie content which was 260 per serving, the highest of all. The same can be said for their sodium content, as they deliver 480 milligrams, about 20% your daily value, per serving!
Pros:
- Made from whole wheat flour, bran, and lightly sweetened with real fruit juices.
- Have an excellent texture, nicely crisp and a bit chewy.
- Can leave the mini waffles attached in a set of 4 or break them apart into individuals.
- Great source of dietary fiber.
- USDA organic, non-GMO, and vegan friendly.
- Box features a recipe for tasty looking toppings.
Cons:
- Separating the mini waffles from one another does not come all that easy.
- Some pieces of thin batter in and around the waffle sets, making them prone to burning.
- Highest in calorie and sodium content.
Best Frozen Waffle FAQs
Is It Safe to Eat Frozen Waffles Without Cooking?
Like most frozen food products, it’s not a great idea to eat frozen waffles straight from frozen without cooking them first--unless the waffles are specifically designed to be enjoyed this way.
The reason for this is that a bacterium called Listeria is able to survive in frozen temperatures and thawing and then consuming your waffle may enable the bacteria to populate.
Bottom line: keep your frozen foods frozen until you’re ready to heat them and always check your packaging for food safety instructions.
Are Frozen Waffles Good in an Air Fryer?
Yes! Frozen waffles are a perfect item for air fryer cooking, as this appliance is a pro at making foods crisp while avoiding sogginess. Just make sure to place your waffles in a single layer, as full air exposure is key to crispness.
How Do You Make Frozen Waffles Better?
Not impressed with your frozen waffles’ performance? Here are a few ideas for making them a bit tastier!
- Skip the butter and whip up a homemade spread! Try our Simple 3-Ingredient Strawberry Jam or this 4-Ingredient Vegan Nutella.
- Use the lowest setting on your toaster or toaster oven and toast your waffles for 2 or perhaps even 3 rounds. Slow and steady wins the race!
- Try heating your waffles in a pool of melted butter in a cast iron skillet. This will help you to achieve a very crispy exterior while giving your waffles a built-in buttery flavor.
Final Thoughts on the Best Frozen Waffles
Among the many different frozen waffle brands and varieties we tested, our favorites ranged from waffles that met traditional expectations to those that went a bit outside the box with unique ingredients or different flavor profiles.
