What is Pizza Sauce?
Pizza sauce is a tomato based red sauce, crafted specifically for the purpose of topping a pizza as it bakes. One key feature of pizza sauce is that it has a thick texture, as this helps to prevent the pizza crust from becoming soggy during cooking.
In addition, since pizza sauce is to be cooked in the oven once combined with the crust and toppings, most pizza sauces are only briefly simmered or are otherwise barely cooked ahead of time.
What Ingredients Are in Pizza Sauce?
To make pizza sauce, fresh tomatoes (most often paste or plum tomatoes) are blended and lightly seasoned with onion and/or garlic, salt, black pepper, and fresh or dried herbs.
Of course, the exact ingredients will vary, as a homemade sauce recipe may dramatically differ from that of a store bought sauce.

The Criteria
In order to win a top spot in the aforementioned categories, each store bought pizza sauce was given a score in 5 main criteria. We used these to calculate an overall average ranking for each sauce, and from there, we selected our top 8 scorers!
- Taste & Texture: evaluating the flavor and texture of each pizza sauce, especially as it pertains to spreadability and viscosity.
- Nutrition Content: specifically considering calorie, fat, sugar, and sodium contents as well as quantity and variety of vitamins/minerals provided.
- Unique Characteristics: such as a special flavor, distinguishing texture, or any other feature which sets one pizza sauce apart from the others.
- Value: calculated to the price per ounce.
- Production & Packaging: how readily available each pizza sauce is to most consumers as well as how it is produced and any positive or negative points on packaging and labeling.
Best Authentic Style Pizza Sauce:
Cucina Antica 'La Pizza' Premium Pizza Sauce
Size: 16 oz jar
Here is how Cucina Antica 'La Pizza' Premium Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Since the 19th century, the family behind Cucina Antica has been farming and processing tomatoes in Southern Italy and turning them into handcrafted products like their ‘La Pizza’ sauce. This sauce is by far the most rustic feeling, loaded with chunky, rough cut tomatoes and plenty of fresh garlic and diced onion. Our tasting panel agreed that picking up a jar of this stuff is as close to a homemade pizza sauce recipe as you could get--without the effort of doing it yourself of course!
Other ingredients include extra virgin olive oil and basil as well as both white and black pepper, all of which come together to produce a flavorful sauce that is a well balanced bite of acidic yet rich, salty yet sweet and all around delicious pizza sauce.
In accordance with the handcrafted feel of the sauce itself, the jar is wrapped in a rustic-feeling brown paper label which also happens to inform us that this product is non-GMO project verified as well as certified paleo. And, it just so happens to be the lowest-calorie sauce we tested, with just 25 calories per ¼ cup serving!
A bit to our surprise, this one turned out to be more of a watery sauce than a thick and homogenous concoction. All of those tomato hunks are suspended in a thinner base and we did not find this sauce to spread all that evenly--but hey, it’s rustic!
Also, this brand doesn’t seem to be the most widely available. We did manage to score our jar atWhole Foods, but depending on your area, you may need to shop this brand online.
Pros:
- Made by a family-owned business with 200 years tomato farming and production experience!
- Authentic Italian family recipe has a rustic appeal.
- Made from simple, whole food ingredients and seasonings.
- Very balanced flavor profile--one of our tasting panel’s favorites.
- Nice, rustic packaging and labeling.
- Non-GMO and paleo certified.
- The lowest calorie pizza sauce we tested, with just 25 per serving.
Cons:
- Consistency is rather uneven--partially watery yet partially chunky.
- Not at all easy to spread evenly on a pizza dough.
- Only available in certain stores and online.
Best Organic Pizza Sauce:
365 Whole Foods Market Organic Pizza Sauce
Size: 14 oz jar
Here is how 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.4 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
This organic pizza sauce from the store brand at Whole Foods Market hit the mark in a number of different areas. In addition to being USDA certified organic by Quality Assurance International, it is also completely non-GMO.
We love the velvety smooth consistency it bears with juuuust enough small pieces of vegetable in the mix to add textural interest and give you something to bite down on from time to time.
Its ingredients list is quite simple, containing just organic tomato puree, a splash of extra virgin olive oil, and seasonings like organic onion powder, organic garlic powder, basil, and black pepper. This pizza sauce is free from added sugars but what it does have is a super impressive micronutrient profile! One ¼ cup serving of this sauce gives you 20% your DV of vitamin C and smaller quantities of vitamin A, potassium, and iron.
Unfortunately, we found the flavor of this pizza sauce to be somehow processed tasting. It has a taste more like reconstituted tomato paste as opposed to fresh tomato sauce. It's very sweet, concentrated, and caramelly tasting--not a lot of freshness going on here.
Also, we found this pizza sauce to be almost spicy due to the amount of black pepper in the mix. While we are complete peppercorn aficionados over here, it’s worth noting that there is certainly a bit of heat at the forefront here which might not be to the taste of everyone.
Pros:
- USDA certified organic by QAI.
- Non-GMO.
- Smooth, cohesive consistency.
- Simple ingredients list with plenty of spices and seasonings.
- No added sugars.
- Provides a number of vitamins and minerals, including 20% your DV of vitamin C.
Cons:
- Flavor is quite processed tasting, more like a tomato paste than a lightly cooked pizza sauce.
- Seems to contain a lot of black pepper, giving the whole sauce some unexpected spice.
Best Ultra-Rich Pizza Sauce:
Primal Kitchen Unsweetened Pizza Sauce with Avocado Oil
Size: 16 oz jar
Here is how Primal Kitchen Unsweetened Pizza Sauce with Avocado Oil scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
This delicious sauce from the folks at Primal Kitchen is absolutely bursting with fresh tomato flavor! It’s tough for even us to put our finger on it, but something about this pizza sauce just tastes like pizza. The flavor here is mostly tomato focused with just a hint of all of the other good stuff.
In addition to this rich tomato flavor there is also the fact that it is richly textured as well. This is one super velvety, smooth, thick sauce. And the sauce isn’t the only thing that is thick here, the jar itself is hefty and satisfying too! It’s actually a real mason jar with a thick gold lid, which makes it really nice for re-use purposes.
This pizza sauce comes with an impressive resume of certifications and verifications such as: non-GMO project verified, whole 30 approved, and paleo certified designations. It is also free from both soy and canola oils as well as is free of any added sugars. On top of all of this goodness is the fact that in lieu of other oil types, this pizza sauce is made with avocado oil which is rich in heart-healthy oleic acids!
Despite the goodness of that avo oil, it does unfortunately raise both the fat and calorie contents of this pizza sauce. It comes in at 60 calories per serving and 3 grams of fat per serving, but thankfully remains saturated fat free.
Also in the negative column: the price tag. While not the highest of all pizza sauces we looked at, it was still quite a lot, and this 16-ounce jar left our wallets $7.50 lighter.
Pros:
- Features a super robust tomato flavor which just screams pizza!
- Is a velvety, thick, and smooth sauce.
- Packaged in a real (and completely reusable!) mason jar.
- Non-GMO verified, Whole30 approved, and Paleo certified.
- Free from soy, canola, and added sugar.
- Made with heart healthy avocado oil.
Cons:
- High in fat--3 grams per serving.
- High in calories--60 per serving.
- Pretty expensive, costing about $.50 per ounce.
Best Keto-Friendly Pizza Sauce:
Rao's Homemade Pizza Sauce
Size: 13 oz jar
Here is how Rao's Homemade Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Unlike some other varieties of pizza sauce which are made from tomato paste or puree, Rao’s Homemade Pizza Sauce is made from not just one but two types of whole tomatoes: Italian whole peeled tomatoes and Italian cherry tomatoes! Aside from these two tomatoes, the other additives are as simple as some olive oil, minced carrot and onion, garlic, salt, and fresh herbs. In fact, you can even see plenty of torn leaves of fresh basil floating around in the sauce.
The bottle makes certain to inform you that it is a product of Italy--further cementing its legitimacy in our minds--and we love the middle of the road texture this sauce features. Not too chunky but not too smooth, it’s just right!
Now let’s get to the info that pertains to this category specifically. Not only are there zero added sugars in this pizza sauce, but it features the lowest naturally occurring sugar content of all the sauces we tested with just 2 grams per serving. In accordance, Rao’s also has the lowest net carbs per serving--just 2 grams as well, making it entirely keto friendly.
Carb count is not the only feature of Rao’s that is quite small however as the jar itself is among the tiniest we encountered! At just 13-ounces in total, there are only about 6 servings in the container which depending on the size and quantities of pizza pies you’re working with, might not even be enough.
It’s also worth noting that flavor-wise, this pizza sauce errs more on the side of sweet & acidic as opposed to salty & savory. This one is a matter of personal taste but if you prefer your pizza sauce to be more piquant, you might want to add some savory seasonings or opt for a brand with a bit more savor to it.
Pros:
- Made with two types of whole Italian style tomatoes.
- Contains just a handful of simple, whole food ingredients.
- Lots of large leaves of fresh basil--yum!
- Product of Italy.
- Perfect textural balance somewhere between a chunky and a smooth sauce.
- Lowest sugar and net carb contents make this the most keto-friendly pizza sauce.
Cons:
- Size of the jar is quite small, only 13-ounces.
- Overall flavor is more sweet and sharp as compared to other tastier, more savory sauces we tried.
Best Nutrient Dense Pizza Sauce:
Otamot Organic Pizza Sauce
Size: 12 oz jar
Here is how Otamot Organic Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 3.9 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
While it’s true that Otomot takes its name by spelling the word ‘Tomato’ backwards, we can assure you that there is nothing retrograde about this sauce. In fact, it’s more forward thinking than anything! Created by a father who wanted to easily make healthier meals that his kids would eat, Otomot products take things a step further by incorporating tons of healthful ingredients into the usual pizza sauce base.
In addition to those naturally nutrient dense tomatoes, there's plenty of other fruit and veggie goodness inside. Sweet onion, sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash, red bell pepper, red beets, fresh garlic, basil are all rounded out with some organic EVOO, organic white balsamic vinegar, and organic garlic powder. All these ingredients give this pizza sauce a unique flavor and textural profile and you can really taste each of them from the earthy red beets to the autumnal butternut squash.
With all of these goodies inside, it’s no wonder that this one is the best pizza sauce for nutrition as it packs all different types of vitamins and minerals, from 15% your DV of both vitamin K and vitamin E to 10% your DV of vitamin B6, plus smaller quantities of vitamin A, riboflavin, potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. Wow!
We also love the way the label and packaging of this pizza sauce draws you in. The glossy, rainbow colored front label reads almost like a color test of all of the different items you’ll find inside each jar of Otamot Organic Pizza Sauce.
While we loved the looks of both the packaging and the nutrition panel on this sauce, we didn’t love the look of the pizza sauce itself. The varied veggie content gives the sauce an overall orangey-brown color as opposed to deep, traditional red and it has a thick, pasty texture which is not as appetizing.
Also, while we appreciate the unique flavor that all of those different veggies bring to the table, this is definitely not your typically flavored pizza sauce. Whatever pizza you make with Otamot Organic Pizza Sauce is going to be a bit offbeat and non-traditional, so be aware of that before counting on it to deliver classic flavor!
Pros:
- Pizza sauce is crafted with increased nutritional benefits in mind.
- Contains tons of fresh vegetables aside from the usual tomatoes.
- Unique vegetable flavors come through, giving the sauce a one of a kind taste.
- Provides many different vitamins and minerals in each serving.
- Packaging and label are bright and intriguing.
Cons:
- Color and texture of the sauce itself are a bit off and not as appetizing as others.
- Flavor is not that of classic pizza sauce, making it not as versatile as some of the other options.
Best Budget Pizza Sauce:
Good & Gather Organic Pizza Sauce
Size: 14 oz jar
Here is how Good & Gather Organic Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.6 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.4 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.4 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
Okay so this one may not be the flat out cheapest pizza sauce we tested, but it is extremely affordable and in our book, your best buy for a few cents more than the lowest priced options out there on the market. The 14-ounce jar we picked up is just shy of $2.00, making it a wonderfully economical buy--and still half as expensive as the average store bought pizza sauce!
Good & Gather Organic Pizza Sauce is not at all chunky, rather it is a smooth sauce that bears a rich red color and has a deeply concentrated tomato taste. Floating around in the sea of tomato sauce are large pieces of fresh basil and parsley, imparting a zesty flavor and complementing the tomato base nicely.
This pizza sauce is certified USDA organic and non-GMO project verified, as well as is free from any artificial colors or flavors. Like other food products from Target It comes with a “100% satisfaction or your money back” guarantee and the back of the label features some handy cooking ideas such as tips for spicing up your homemade pizzas and topping inspirations.
Texturally speaking, this pizza sauce was not a favorite among our tasting panel for the fact that it contains some bits of tough tomato skin and/or veggie pieces mixed into the smooth sauce.
It also has soybean oil, which of course introduces potential allergen issues and there is also the issue of how much sodium this pizza sauce contains. It was by far the highest in the salt department, with 340 milligrams per each and every ¼ cup, which is almost 15% your DV!
Pros:
- One of the most economical and best bang-for-your-buck pizza sauce options out there.
- Has a smooth, spreadable texture and concentrated flavor.
- Features large pieces of flavorful fresh herbs.
- USDA organic and non-GMO verified.
- Comes with the Good & Gather Promise--a full money back guarantee.
- Back of the label has some pizza making tips and inspirations.
Cons:
- We found some bits of tough veggie skins & ends in the sauce.
- Contains soy ingredients, but fails to mention this in the allergen warning section of the label.
- High in sodium.
Best Premium Pizza Sauce:
Williams Sonoma San Marzano Tomato Pizza Sauce
Size: 18 oz jar
Here is how Williams Sonoma San Marzano Tomato Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 3.9 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
If you’re looking to go gourmet with your homemade pizza night, you need a pizza sauce to match, and that’s exactly where this sauce from posh kitchen goods company Williams Sonoma comes into the picture.
Their San Marzano Tomato Pizza Sauce is the only pizza sauce we found which was made from real San Marzano tomatoes--a variety of tomato grown in a certain region of Italy, prized for their rich flavor and low water content.
Combined with just a few other ingredients like basil and black pepper, these tomatoes produce a pizza sauce that is rich and intense, tangy and savory all at the same time. The consistency of this sauce is near perfect as well, as it is thick and smooth yet still has a few larger tomato chunks in the mix which add some textural interest.
Taste and textural goodness aside, this sauce has plenty of nutrient benefits as well! Williams Sonoma Pizza Sauce has both the highest protein and fiber contents, providing 4 grams of each per ¼ cup serving. It also offers 20% your DV of potassium, 12% your DV of iron, and a bit of calcium per serving as well. And, the large jar indicates that it contains enough sauce to make 3 12-inch pizzas, so you can count on this one to go the distance for your next pizza night.
Despite the fact that this sauce is free from added sugar, it still ranks extremely high on the sugar charts with 10 grams per serving. Even higher than that though, is the price tag attached to this pizza sauce. The 18-ounce jar cost us almost $13.00, which works out to almost 2.5x the average!
Further upping the exclusivity is the fact that you will not be finding this pizza sauce alongside the grocery store brands at your local supermarket. The only way to get this one is to pick it up from a Williams Sonoma store or to order online.
Pros:
- Made with coveted San Marzano tomatoes, producing optimal flavor and texture.
- Seasoned with whole food ingredients like fresh basil and cracked black pepper.
- Rich and well balanced flavor is the favorite among our tasting panel.
- Texture is perfect mixture of smooth yet chunky.
- High in fiber, protein, and some vitamins and minerals.
- Large jar contains enough sauce to make 3 whole pizzas.
Cons:
- High in sugar, with 10 grams per serving.
- Very expensive, costing $13 per jar.
- Limited accessibility--only available for purchase at Williams Sonoma stores or online.
Best Canned Pizza Sauce:
Cento Fully Prepared Pizza Sauce
Size: 15 oz can
Here is how Cento Fully Prepared Pizza Sauce scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.4 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.4 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
While many of the store bought pizza sauces we found were packed in glass jars, we did find a few canned varieties, which are especially useful for stocking your pantry alongside your other favorite canned tomato products. Metal cans are one of the most classic packaging methods for these types of staple foods. This packing technique helps to extend shelf life, protect the products from light, and even stack nicely on top of one another.
This canned pizza sauce from Cento (one of the biggest names in canned tomatoes, we might add) was our favorite for many reasons, among them the fact that the sauce has a thick, smooth, structure consistency that makes it ultra-spreadable--one of the easiest to distribute evenly across a pizza dough.
The sauce is made with GMO-free tomatoes and the plastic coating in the can is free from BPA’s. At just $1.79 for the 15-ounce can, the price tag is certainly approachable and this works out to just $.12 per ounce. Also, this was the only featured pizza sauce which has a full pizza recipe on the back, right down to a homemade crust!
One downside with canned pizza sauce, however, is that unlike pizza sauces which come in glass jars with lids, you’ve got to transfer any leftovers to a different container. In addition, we found the flavor of this pizza sauce to be just a bit off as it definitely has a “canned soup” taste to it--a little metallic as compared to the jarred sauces which were clean and tomato-forward.
Pros:
- Packed in a super shelf-stable, stackable metal can.
- Pizza sauce is thick and very spreadable.
- GMO-free.
- Can is lined with BPA-free coating.
- One of the cheapest pizza sauces we tested.
- Label features a full recipe for ‘Pronto Pizza”.
Cons:
- Can is not resealable, so you’ll need to store leftovers in a separate container.
- Flavor is not the best and has that unpleasant “canned” taste to it.
Best Store Bought Pizza Sauce FAQs
What’s the Difference Between Pizza Sauce and Pasta Sauce?
Though they may look and taste just about the same, there are a couple of key differences between pizza sauce and pasta sauce, also known simply as “tomato sauce”.
Primarily, pizza sauce is only very lightly cooked--if at all--whereas pasta sauce is typically simmered for many hours before it is deemed complete. Also, pizza sauce tends to be thick and rich in texture in order for optimal spreading over a crust while pasta sauce may be more watery.
What’s the Difference Between Pizza Sauce and Marinara Sauce?
Marinara sauce, on the other hand, is yet another thing entirely! Though more similar to pizza sauce in flavor (due to quick cooking time and gentle blending as compared to fully developed pasta sauce), marinara sauce tends to be more watery in consistency than pizza sauce.
For these and all of the other distinctions between the two, see our full guide to the differences between Marinara vs. Tomato Sauce!
Can You Use Pizza Sauce Instead of Spaghetti Sauce?
With a bit of adjusting, yes you can! If you’re fresh out of pasta sauce but happen to have a bit of extra pizza sauce on hand (just like we do after doing this product review!) you can certainly use it to dress your pasta dishes.
Before you go saucing anything though, you’ll want to gently simmer the pizza sauce in a small pot or saucepan for 20-30 minutes to marry the flavors and develop the tomato flavor. Feel free to add seasonings, herbs, or any aromatic vegetables here, then pour over cooked pasta.
What Can You Add to Pizza Sauce to Make it Taste Better?
Not a fan of the jar or can of pizza sauce you picked up? Here are a few quick add-ons that will help to take any less-than-tasty store bought sauce to another level!
- Stir in a glug or two of good quality olive oil. Oftentimes, store bought sauces are very acidic so a bit of heart-healthy, fruity olive oil will help to balance the sharpness.
- Sauté a bit of freshly minced garlic and onion in a hot skillet, then stir into your store bought pizza sauce for a homemade touch.
- Get some heat going with a sprinkling of crushed red pepper flakes, chili paste, or one of these substitutes!
- Add your own fresh herbs. Whether from a window box, garden, or supermarket, greens like basil, rosemary, and parsley are some of the best options for brightening a store bought pizza sauce.
Tasting and Reviewing the Best Pizza Sauces: The Bottom Line
The bottom line here is that there is truly a store bought pizza sauce out there to suit every pie. Whether you aim to craft a pizza that will transport you to a sidewalk café in Naples or you'd like something that suits your keto-friendly lifestyle, there are great options for all of your pizza needs.
