No need to wait for a night out at your favorite Mexican restaurant in order to enjoy the chips of your dreams, because we’re counting down our top picks for the best tortilla chips you’ll find at the supermarket. Read on!
What Are Tortilla Chips?
Most tortilla chips start out as actual tortillas--yes those same corn masa flour-based discs you eat your tacos with!--before being cut into triangles and bathed in hot oil until crisp. Some mass-market brands however, make their chips from large sheets of cornmeal or corn flour in order to produce greater quantities of tortilla chips in less time.
Types of Tortilla Chips
Tortilla chips are typically made from white corn, but other types of corn are popular as well such as yellow corn, blue corn, and even red corn! The triangle is a classic tortilla chip shape but you may also find chips that are sliced into strips for toppings or cut as round chips for dipping.
The chips may be fried in any number of different oil varieties such as vegetable oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, or even more premium options like avocado oil.
Once fried until crisp, the chips are most often simply seasoned with just salt but also may be flavored with other complementary ingredients like lime, garlic, hot chiles, or onion.

The Taste Test
The contenders in our tortilla chip taste test were each sampled plain as well as with the most classically paired product: salsa! (Lucky for you we did a full taste test and review on store bought salsa as well.)
These two different rounds of taste testing allowed our panel to evaluate each chip variety objectively, as well as see how each variety stands up to dipping and dunking
The Criteria
During the evaluations, our tortilla chip test subjects were given a score in each of the following 5 points of criteria:
- Taste & Texture: considering the base corn flavor of each tortilla chip as well as the balance of any seasonings used as well as the overall textural experience.
- Nutrition Content: taking into account the calorie, fat, and sodium contents in each serving of tortilla chips as well as any vitamins, minerals, and general ingredient quality.
- Unique Characteristics: including unique flavors, special characteristics, or any other factor which makes one tortilla chip stand apart from the competition.
- Value: price per ounce.
- Production & Packaging: the regional availability of each tortilla chip variety as well as methods of production and any specific packaging details.
The preceding grades we then used to calculate an overall average score for each tortilla chip variety which we used to make our final winner determinations!

- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0

Kicking things off here we’ve got our top pick for a chip that is basic in the best of ways. When it comes to “classic” tortilla chips, we’re looking for pure corn flavor, excellent crunch, and the perfect texture--all of which we found in this humble bag of Tostitos Original Restaurant-Style Tortilla Chips.
The first thing that really stood out to us about these chips is their SIZE. These triangular beauties are much larger as compared to the other chips we tested. No such thing as a one-biter here, especially when piled high with your favorite dip like our Simple Watermelon Salsa!
And speaking of dips, these chips have an excellent versatility when it comes to texture as they are thin and crisp enough to enjoy on their own but are also the perfect chip for other applications as well. Whether you’re looking for a chunky guacamole companion, need something that can make its way through all the levels of your famous seven layer dip, or serve as the perfect foundation for a batch of nachos loaded with all the toppings, these chips are big and strong enough to do it all!
There are no artificial flavors, preservatives, or MSG in these chips and we also love that Tostitos always offers a freshness guarantee in case you wind up with a bag of chips that doesn’t meet your expectations. We also have to say, they seem to have really figured things out as far as shipping and storage as the number of broken chips in our bag was astoundingly small. And for even more fun, there is a scannable QR code on the bag which leads you to all kinds of goodies like coupons, recipes, and fun contests!
Unfortunately, these Tostitos chips were the only tortilla chips we tested that aren’t non-GMO project verified. Corn crops and genetic modification have a long history together but due to health concerns, many brands are option to use only GMO free corn. However, most Tostitos chips have yet to make the switch.
Also, while Tostitos Original Restaurant-Style Tortilla Chips are not the saltiest chips we tested, they certainly come across a bit more sodium heavy than their counterparts and could be a bit overwhelming if you plan to pair them with a salty dip.
Pros:
- Impressive in size and shape--if you are looking for big tortilla chips, look no further!
- Perfect texture offers a ton of versatility.
- Free from artificial flavors, preservatives, and MSG.
- Number of broken chips in the bag was surprisingly minimal given their large size!
- Scannable QR code links you to recipes, sweepstakes, and other interactive content.
Cons:
- Includes corn and oils which may include genetically modified ingredients.
- Flavor is a bit overly salty, even though the sodium content is reasonably moderate.
Best Alternative Tortilla Chips: Beanitos Restaurant-Style White Bean Tortilla Chips
Size: 5-ounce bag
Flavor: Sea Salt
Here is how Beanitos Restaurant-Style White Bean Tortilla Chips scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.1 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
For folks who can’t tolerate corn or simply would prefer something a bit more out of the box, there are now several different types of alternative tortilla chips on the market! Our favorite among them: Beanitos Restaurant-Style White Bean Tortilla Chips.
Instead of using whole ground corn like classic tortilla chips, these are made from American farm sourced whole white beans (a mixture of great northern and navy beans), rice flour, and tapioca starch. This makeup means these chips are a higher protein, lower carb alternative as compared to regular tortilla chips. One serving of these chips actually delivers 5 grams of protein per serving--a stark difference from all of the other chips we tested, each of which only had a gram or two at best--plus 4 grams dietary fiber!
All of this boils down to one key takeaway: Beanitos are an extremely satisfying alternative to corn based tortilla chips and a serving of these is bound to stick with you and keep you full for much longer! Plus, the packaging is really cute for the way it shares exactly where your beans are coming from (in our case, the states of Nebraska and North Dakota) as well as a simple little recipe for some tasty sounding pineapple salsa!
On the downside, the flavor of these offbeat tortilla chips is most certainly offbeat as well. It has a slightly funky, slightly off-putting, bean flavor in the background that isn’t exactly what you’d expect upon biting into a tortilla chip. Also, the packaging of these chips seemed to be sadly lacking in air cushioning and our bag had lots of broken bits in it. Actually, we had a tough time finding even one fully intact chip!
And as far as availability goes, the distribution of this snack might be more limited as compared to some others. We found our bag at the local health food store but did not have any luck locating this brand elsewhere.
Pros:
- Made from whole white beans as opposed to corn!
- Beans are sourced directly from American farms.
- Lower in net carbs as compared to corn-based tortilla chips.
- Each serving has 5 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving!
- Much more filling as compared to regular tortilla chips.
- Packaging is super informative with sourcing information and recipes right on the label.
Cons:
- Does have a somewhat bean-y flavor that might not be to everyone’s liking.
- Bag was full of broken chips--add more air to the next batch please!
- Not as readily available as bigger name brands of tortilla chips.
Best Tortilla Chips with Lime: Late July Snacks Organic Sea Salt & Lime Tortilla Chips
Size: 10.1-ounce bag
Flavor: Sea Salt & Lime
Here is how Late July Snacks Organic Sea Salt & Lime Tortilla Chips scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Out of all of the flavored tortilla chips we tasted, lime was without a doubt the most ubiquitous flavor out there, leading us to give them a category all to themselves!
These organic lime chips from Late July Snacks captured our attention as soon as we opened the bag for the way the citrusy perfume immediately began wafting out. When it came time to taste, our lime expectations were more than met as we found these tortilla chips to feature just the right amount of lime flavor--delivering all of the interest and refreshment you’d expect while simultaneously helping the light corn flavor to really shine.
Their light yet craveable flavor makes them perfect for enjoying on their own or as a side to another Mexican inspired dish like our Pulled Mushroom Tacos. In addition to organic whole ground corn and lime oil, these chips contain nothing more than organic sunflower oil and/or organic safflower oil! We love a simple ingredients list when we see one.
Compared to most of the other tortilla chips we evaluated, these are much lower in salt with just 70 milligrams per serving, about half the average of what we encountered. These chips are also USDA certified organic and provide at least 20 grams of whole grains per serving! The bag also makes note of the fact that this product is made in a peanut-free facility and, speaking of that bag, it’s fully recyclable through TerraCyle.
All in all, we basically loved everything about these chips. However, the bag was notably difficult to open (time to get out the scissors!), and would be especially a pain if you tote them along to a picnic or other affair where kitchen tools are not at the ready.
Also, if you’re sensitive to tang, it’s possible the lime oil will be a bit too strong for your taste, but if you ask our tasting panel--they say bring 'em in by the barrel full please!
Pros:
- Bright lime flavor is perfectly balanced by earthy white corn and just the right amount of salt!
- Has a limited ingredients list of whole foods.
- Lower in salt than many of the tortilla chips we tested.
- USDA organic.
- Provides 20 grams (or more!) of whole grains per serving.
- Made in a peanut-free facility.
- Bag is recyclable through the TerraCyle program.
Cons:
- Bag was really hard to open--requires something sharp!
- Proportion of lime oil may be a little overly tangy for some folks’ palates.
Best Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips: Xochitl 'The Dipper' Salted White Corn Chips
Size: 12-ounce bag
Flavor: Sea Salt
Here is how Xochitl 'The Dipper' Salted White Corn Chips scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.7 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
The folks at Xochitl know their stuff when it comes to tortilla chips. Their regular chips are a fan favorite, with a notoriously thin, crisp, completely melt in your mouth texture. Problem is, these delicate snacks are also notoriously fragile, so the powers at be took their customer requests seriously and finally delivered ‘The Dipper’--a stronger version of their classic chip.
According to our tasting panel, this variety is the perfect chip, with a savory corn flavor and an almost airy texture. Though they are indeed stronger than their traditional tortilla chips, they are still the thinnest of all of the chips we tested. Xochitl’s tortilla chips are always made with high quality ingredients--from the stone ground white corn to the organic palm olein oil. Unlike other tortilla chips, this variety is completely free from hydrogenated oils and GMO’s.
Xochitl is also well known for packaging their chips in a tall and sturdy paper bag. Not only does this give an eye-catching rustic vibe to the chips, it also seems to protect the precious chips better than other types of bags. In spite of their thinness, the number of broken chips here is at an all time low!
Though these were the favorite tortilla chips among our tasting panel, the fact remains that they are likely still too thin for some dipping tasks. They held up just fine with our salsas but we can see some breakage occurring when the chips are put up against a thick queso or heavy nacho toppings.
These chips also scored lower on the nutrition scale as they contain quite a dose of fat due to the inclusion of palm oil in the ingredients. Each serving contains 3.5 grams of saturated fat. This might not sound like all that much but that’s nearly 20% your DV of saturated fat in just one serving of tortilla chips!
Pros:
- Best in flavor and texture according to our tasting panel!
- Offers a thicker texture, more suited for dipping.
- Made with high quality stone ground corn and organic oils.
- Hydrogenated oil free.
- GMO free.
- Packaged in a cool paper bag which looks great and protects the chips.
Cons:
- Overall consistency is still quite thin, making them prone to breakage at times.
- Higher in saturated fat than other tortilla chips.
Best Flavored Tortilla Chips: Vista Hermosa Spicy Red Corn Totopos
Size: 9-ounce bag
Flavor: Spicy Red Corn
Here is how Vista Hermosa Spicy Red Corn Totopos scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
During our product research and shopping, we discovered that tortilla chips really run the gamut--all the way from lime and garlic to spicy jalapeno and even cinnamon dusted! This bag of Spicy Red Corn Totopos from Vista Hermosa truly impressed us with its uniqueness and authenticity though.
The first thing that took hold of us was their beautifully earthy, autumnal red coloring which immediately set them apart from the other flavored (and fakely hued, we might add) tortilla chips out there. Their red corn base gives them a unique flavor as well, imparting plenty of nuttiness to the resultant chips--a welcome counterpoint to all of that morita chile heat!
As mortias are smoked chiles though, a lovely earthiness is also brought to the table making these chips a perfectly balanced experience of sweetly nutty corn, bright heat, and smoky undertones.
The texture of these chips is among the thickest we experienced, making them an extremely satisfying standalone snack, ideal for dipping into the heartiest of dips, or for adding crumbling and adding a shower of flavor atop meals like our Vegetarian Chili or Mexican Quinoa Stuffed Sweet Potatoes.
We also love the packaging on this one as on the back of the bag there is a pictographic step by step drawing of how these red corn totopos are made and also informs that they offer a wee bit of micronutrient content in the form of calcium, iron, and potassium!
It’s important to note that these chips are actually pretty spicy though! Our tasting panel found them to be a pleasant experience but with habanero powder and those smoky morita chiles in the mix, they certainly will be too hot for some folks.
Also, we think the salt balance is a little off here and our feeling is confirmed by the high sodium content. Among tortilla chips we tested, these came in the highest, with almost 200 milligrams per serving!
Pros:
- Chips are a beautiful rust color due to being made from a unique variety of red corn.
- Flavor is a perfect balance of nutty, spicy, and smoky.
- Texture is thick and dense--this is one hearty chip!
- Ideal for eating alone, dipping, or crumbling as a topping.
- Bag contains a ton of helpful information like the totopo chip making process.
- Each serving provides a small dose of several vitamins and minerals.
Cons:
- Multiple chile ingredients in the mix means these chips may be too spicy for some chip lovers.
- Salt content is notably higher than other chips we tested.
Best Blue Corn Tortilla Chips: Garden of Eatin' Blue Corn Tortilla Chips
Size: 16-ounce bag
Flavor: Original
Here is how Garden of Eatin' Blue Corn Tortilla Chips scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.6 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Seeing as Garden of Eatin’ has been cranking out these blue corn chips for the last 50 years, it only makes sense that they know what they’re doing!
These blue corn chips may not be organic, but they are made with organic blue corn--an uncommon feat as organic corn is often deemed too costly and time consuming to grow. They also opt to use expeller pressed oil which has several health benefits over traditionally refined oils.
In the taste department, these Garden of Eatin’ tortilla chips have great corn flavor, with the blue corn delivering a slightly sweeter taste as compared to more common white and/or yellow corn chips. According to our tasters, these chips are also perfectly salted, hitting the tongue as nice and savory without leaving your lips all pruney. We also love that one serving of these blue beauties provides 10% your DV of iron and that the company also supports Folds of Honor, a philanthropic cause that works to provide educational scholarships for military families.
We had no gripes with these chips as far as taste, production, or nutrition go, however we do want to note that the consistency of these is definitely grittier as compared to the other colors of tortilla chips we tried. Also, the bag of these we scored is HUGE--we’re talking a full pound of chips here--and as if it could not even hold up under its own weight, it rather unfortunately ripped down the seams on us during pouring.
Pros:
- Made with organic blue corn.
- Fried in expeller pressed oil, as opposed to traditional chemically refined oils.
- Chips have rich corn flavor with a pleasant sweetness and perfect salt balance.
- Each serving provides 10% your DV of iron.
- Each purchase supports Folds of Honor, a good cause that supports military families.
Cons:
- Texture is grittier than other chips we tried.
- 1-pound bag is overly large and the quality of that packaging is not all that sturdy.
Best Low Sodium Tortilla Chips: 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Unsalted Restaurant-StyleTortilla Chips
Size: 14-ounce bag
Flavor: Unsalted
Here is how 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Unsalted Restaurant-Style Tortilla Chips scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.4 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
While sodium content goes hand in hand with most tortilla chips--and crunchy snack foods in general, for that matter--there are some chip varieties out there which are indeed suitable for folks who need to watch their sodium intake or would simply prefer to be in control of the salt content themselves!
These Unsalted Restaurant-Style Tortilla Chips from 365 Whole Foods Market Organic were simply the best of our low-sodium bunch, coming in with just 5 milligrams of salt per serving! The absence of sodium by no means renders these chips bland though. We found it actually allows the pure corn flavor to really shine and the chips still manage to be surprisingly savory. They’re made with stone ground organic corn, and are fully USDA certified organic as well as are non-GMO project verified.
And happily enough, these high-quality chips were the most affordable of all the tortilla chips we tested. The 14-ounce bag ran us just $2.99 which works out to just $0.21 per ounce!
While the salt content is low, the fat content is unfortunately high coming in at a full 8 grams total fat per serving. In addition, we found that our bag had a few weirdly colored and/or oddly textured chips in the mix, almost as if a few of them got caught in the fryer too long, taking on a deeply golden hue and rough texture.
Pros:
- Very low in sodium, just 5 milligrams per serving.
- Corn flavor is strong and savory, making them super versatile!
- Made with stone ground corn.
- USDA certified organic and non-GMO project verified.
- The most affordable chips we tested--just $0.21 per ounce!
Cons:
- High in fat, with 8 total grams per serving.
- Our bag of chips was not evenly cooked, some chips in the batch were overcooked and oddly colored.
Best Grain Free Tortilla Chips: Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips-Squeeze of Lime
Size: 5-ounce bag
Flavor: Squeeze of Lime
Here is how Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips-Squeeze of Lime scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.7 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.1 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
If you feel confused by the idea of a “grain free” tortilla chip, you’re not alone! After all, tortilla chips are always made from corn or other whole grains, right? Not exactly.
In lieu of corn, these lime flavored tortilla chips from Siete are made from a mixture of blended cassava (a starchy root vegetable native to South America) coconut flour, and chia seeds all fried up in some heart-healthy avocado oil. We love how the chia seeds speckled throughout the crispy triangles actually give them an appearance strikingly similar to actual corn chips!. And though the name reads “squeeze of lime”, we found these chips to have much more than a squeeze--they’re fully flavored with plenty of bright citrus taste.
The texture of these chips is light and airy, almost like a potato puff as opposed to those more granular traditional style tortilla chips. In addition to being grain free of course, these chips are also certified gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan, and paleo. And, despite the super light texture of these chips, they all remained wonderfully intact inside their bag.
Taking into account the price tag on this bag, we felt even more grateful for the aforementioned low proportion of broken chips because each serving of these works out to $1.14 which is over twice that of the average. It’s also important to note that even though these chips are free from grains, the introduction of coconut flour introduces a new potential allergen as well.
Pros:
- Made with root veggies, coconut flour, and chia seeds as opposed to any grains!
- Strong flavor of lime makes these chips bright and refreshing.
- Chips have a light and airy texture.
- Bag features a number of impressive dietary certifications including soy free and paleo.
- Chips are well protected inside their back--no broken chips or crumbs here!
Cons:
- The most expensive tortilla chips we tested, at $5.69 per 5-ounce bag.
- Includes coconut flour, which may be an allergen for some folks.
Best Tortilla Chip FAQs
Are Tortilla Chips Better For You Than Potato Chips?
Yes, but not by much! Tortilla chips are better for the fact that they are typically made from whole grain corn. Also, they soak up less oil as they fry, thereby staying lighter in calorie and fat contents. However, just like a potato chip, a tortilla chip is a processed food item and is best if considered as an “in moderation” item.
Are Tortilla Chips Gluten Free?
Usually yes! All of the tortilla chips we found and tested are indeed gluten free. However, snack foods like chips and crackers are oftentimes processed in facilities that handle wheat and gluten containing ingredients as well, so if cross contamination is a concern, it’s good to check into the specific processing of your tortilla chips.
Does Tortilla Chip Color Affect the Corn Flavor?
Not exactly! Though different colors of corn--and corn products like tortilla chips--do taste different from one another, the factor responsible for these differences in flavor is actually the variety of corn as opposed to the coloring itself.
How Do You Keep Tortilla Chips Fresh?
When it comes to keeping chips fresh, moisture is the enemy! Once you open your bag of tortilla chips, be sure to remove any excess air and reseal it as tightly as possible using a rubber band or clip to hold the top down.
To store fresh chips for a longer period of time, you may want to transfer them to an airtight container like a tupperware or zip top bag. Store your chips in a cool, dry area of your kitchen.
Why Are Restaurant Tortilla Chips Different?
There are a number of reasons why the tortilla chips from your favorite Mexican restaurant might be better than a store bought brand. One thing to keep in mind is that restaurant chips are sometimes actually made in house and served to you fresh from the fryer!
If you’d like your store bought chips to deliver a similar experience, warm them gently in a low oven for a few minutes then serve with a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkling of flaky salt.
