My name is Julie… and I’m a carboholic… LOL Seriously.
One of my friends went low carb to manage her diabetic symptoms and it literally seemed as though all the carbs she wasn’t eating went straight onto my plate.
I live in the glorious state of Washington, in a city close to Seattle… so it’s very easy to hop in the car and go down and hit Pike Place Market or go watch a baseball game if I want to. The view is incredible and I count my blessings all the time when I see one of our gorgeous views. The heat that we’ve been having can totally go away… we’re just not used to it here. Nor are we used to the 10 days of below freezing weather that we had last December. (or the 2 feet of snow that didn’t go away, but I’ll deal with it..)
I work in customer service for one of our electric and gas companies here in the area. It’s a decent job and the pay is good. It allows for plenty of baking and plenty of willing victims… erm… taste testers… ;o)

Do you watch any competitive cooking shows? Like Top Chef or Hell’s Kitchen? If so… which is your favorite and why?
Yes… I do watch competitive cooking shows. I watch them all pretty much. I adore Top Chef… I really like watching ‘The Next Food Network Star’… Hell’s Kitchen is good, yes… but even with the bleeping it’s a bit taxing to watch when there’s someone so brilliantly … combustible…? … involved. It makes you wonder just what makes people still audition for his show. I think that’s why I would much rather fancy myself on Top Chef… at least then the prize is money towards your own restaurant… not some position in Tom’s restaurants. I think it would be hard to work for Chef Ramsey.
What kind of colors do you like?
Any shade of blue. Blue-greens… aqua… teal… turquoise… you name it I love it. My kitchen aid mixer is cobalt blue and my dream kitchen is cobalt or at least a dark clear navy and white. As you may be able to tell from some of my posts, my dishes definitely fall into a blue and white scheme. A single girl can always dream and I think it’s far better to be prepared than to have to settle for what may be around when I finally get my dream kitchen.
Reading any good books lately?
I am currently spending the summer working through a long list of mysteries. I find myself drawn to the ones that have to do with crafting or cooking so among my favorites are the Joanna Fluke – Hannah Swensen series and Diane Mott Davidson – Goldy the Caterer series. I have a healthy appreciation for the Harry Potter Series and often re-read the books before going to the movie.
Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?
I have gained a reputation at work for being a bit of a Dessert person… as in, everyone wants to see what’s going to be coming for our monthly potlucks. I will bow in gracefulness to the wonderful Bakerella and her cake pops. I usually make them in the peanut butter molds and turn them into a variety of ‘cupcakes’. It’s because of bringing them to work so often that I was asked by a friend if I’d make them for her wedding as additional desserts and so I did… with a lemon cake center and then the rest of the design matched her wedding colors.
Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Music Genre? Actor? Actress?
My Favorite movie is… well… having spent 4 years working at a movie theater and seeing pretty much every movie that came out in those 4 years, that’s actually pretty difficult to pinpoint. So I will say that my favorite movie currently is the latest Harry Potter movie…
My favorite Book is … Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
I’m a country Music Chick all the way and having spent my vacation with only the Lady Antebellum CD to accompany me for most of it, they’re my current favorite band.
My favorite Actor is actually Matthey McConeghey and my favorite Actress is Jennifer Garner.
Other than cooking or baking, what other hobbies do you enjoy?
I write fanfiction for various tv shows… I have written the most for the show Sue Thomas FBEye … and have a few CSI Miami and NY stories as well. I enjoy writing as a stress relief. I started writing when I was losing my job due to the financial institution closing my call center and it certainly helped me to pass the 2 months before being employed again and now, almost 3 years later, I’m still hooked. I also crochet and I do love to spend time reading.
What is the ultimate comfort food to you?
I should really say mac and cheese… but you know what? that’s not at all that I reach for or stop for when I’m stressed or depressed. There is nothing at all that hits the spot like an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s Phish food… particularly when it’s been allowed to soften and is just perfectly ooey and gooey… I blush to admit that it disappears in 20 minutes or less. An acceptable substitute would be Haagen Daaz Coffee frozen yogurt.
Do you have a food addiction?
Yes… Due to extreme heat in Washington State, it’s also Slurpee’s… but I blame my recent vacation in Canada for the fact that I’m currently obsessed with dipping my french fries in gravy. Prior to vacation, it’s been bleu cheese dressing all the way.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Frozen reese’s peanut butter cups. shhh… don’t tell.
Who taught you to cook/bake?
I would have to say that I learned at home, growing up. My mom has always done a lot of cooking and baking. We used to take turns picking recipes and making dinner once a week growing up and of course, once I took over on making cookies then that was it. I don’t think my mom made a cookie from the time I was 12 until I went to college.
A lot of my memories are of my grandma cooking and baking. She made really good cinnamon rolls and everyone clamored for her devilled eggs. One of my favorite memories is of her cutting up Granny Smith apples for a pie and handing me a half of one and the salt shaker. Salt just brings out the taste of those apples the best … still.
My skills were further honed when I was a breakfast cook my sophmore year in college and then spent 2 summers as a camp cook down on the Oregon coast. So … I can cook for 300… LOL Anybody need dinner rolls for 300?
