The gluten free cracker aisle has exploded in recent years, now offering a huge range of cracker and cracker-like snacks. Specialty snack foods like this can certainly be expensive though, and with the stakes so high, who wants to gamble on a pricey box of crackers that you have never tried?
So, we here at The Daring Kitchen are taking it upon ourselves to try them for you. We’ve raided the cracker aisle and stocked up on as many gluten free options as we could find, then selected our top 8 picks! We’re telling you all about each of them, and what makes them so good they deserve a spot on our winning list.
What are Gluten Free Crackers?
Gluten free crackers aim to offer all of that crispy, flat, cracker-y goodness--without that pesky problem ingredient wheat of course!
Some folks avoid gluten (always found in wheat-based products, as well as items like soy sauce and beer) for wellness purposes, while others suffer from a full-blown gluten intolerance known as celiac disease. Wherever on the spectrum one happens to fall the fact is, there is plenty of demand for gluten free products like crackers.
What are Gluten Free Crackers Made From?
So, if they’re not made from wheat flour, what the heck are gluten free crackers made of? As it turns out, all kinds of things!
Among alternative flour options, some popular choices are: almond flour, oat flour, rice flour, sorghum flour, potato flour, and even coconut flour. Oftentimes, plant based starches like potato tapioca starch and food starch are used to thicken and help hold the cracker dough together.
Many gluten free crackers also include ingredients like nuts and seeds to amp up the flavor and “heft” of the cracker, while also delivering a dose of nuttiness that wheat would have brought to the table. Just like traditional crackers, gluten free crackers may be thick and hearty or thin and crisp, flavored, plain, or lightly salted.

The Taste Test
Our taste testing portion of the product review was fairly straightforward this time around. Taste a cracker, rank a cracker!
We opted to not pair any of our test subjects with toppings or spreads as we wanted to garner a clear baseline comparison from one GF cracker to the next.
The Criteria
After the taste testing, research, and comparison phases of our review process, we gave every product a score in each of 5 key criteria:
- Taste & Texture: the taste and consistency of each GF cracker as it compares to the others as well as how well it fits the most generally accepted definition of a cracker.
- Nutrition Content: especially calorie, fat, sodium, protein, and fiber contents as well as any micronutrients. This point also considers the overall quality of ingredients used in each product.
- Unique Characteristics: considering special flavors, unusual ingredients, or any other notable factor that makes one gluten free cracker stand apart from the competition.
- Value: the price per ounce of each product.
- Production & Packaging: the location and method of production for each gluten free cracker variety, how widely available it is, and any noteworthy characteristics of packaging.
Not only do these key criteria serve to pinpoint the individual strengths and weaknesses of each gluten free cracker brand, but we also used them to calculate an overall average grade for each product. The highest scorers were crowned the winners of our top 8 spots!
Best Basic Gluten Free Crackers: Absolutely! Gluten Free & Grain Free Cracked Pepper Crackers
Size: 4.4-ounce box
Flavor: Cracked Pepper
Here is how Absolutely! Gluten Free & Grain Free Cracked Pepper Crackers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.4 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.2 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
Absolutely! Gluten Free & Grain Free Cracked Pepper Crackers represent basic at its finest! These starch based crackers offer a subtle yet satisfying mild flavor that makes them well suited to any task you’d ask of a cracker. From topping with spreads, serving on a charcuterie platter or cheese plate, or even crumbling into your favorite bowl of rich clam chowder!
These crackers are not only gluten free but also 100% grain free as well--that means no soy, corn, rice, or oat ingredients here. They are produced in a nut free facility and are completely dairy free, however, vegans take note that these crackers do contain egg ingredients as well as honey.
While the overall flavor of these crackers is a fairly blank canvas, the inclusion of black pepper isn’t just for looks. Those big flecks of peppercorn mixed into the cracker dough offer a bitter, fruity heat which is a welcome complement to most anything you could pair them with. If you ask us, these crackers are the perfect size--not too tiny nor too large--for just about any purpose. Versatility award goes to this one for sure!
One ingredient we didn’t care to see on the list here: palm oil, a known culprit of deforestation and destruction of endangered animal habitat. It can be tough to get away from palm oil containing products, but at the very least, we prefer to see sustainably sourced palm oil.
And, the major red flag associated with these overall excellent crackers is a scary sounding prop-65 warning printed on the side with the text “consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including acrylamide”. Though compounds such as this are present in many different foods especially those that are cooked at high temperatures--think fried potatoes, roasted nuts, and seared meats--depending on where different foods are produced, they may or may not be required to post such warnings on their packaging.
Therefore, it’s likely that many of the other GF crackers we tested also contain the same stuff--the difference is just that those brands aren’t required to announce it. Nevertheless, it’s something to take into consideration when shopping for baked snacks like these!
Pros:
- Basic flavor profile makes this cracker adaptable for any application.
- Completely free from gluten and grains!
- Dairy free (not vegan though).
- Produced in a nut free facility.
- Crackers are nicely sized--not mini nor too large.
Cons:
- Made with palm oil.
- Box includes an acrylamide exposure warning.
Best Organic Gluten Free Crackers: Mary's Gone Crackers Super Seed Seaweed + Black Sesame Crackers
Size: 5.5-ounce box
Flavor: Seaweed + Black Sesame
Here is how Mary's Gone Crackers Super Seed Seaweed + Black Sesame Crackers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 4.2 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
In their own words, the snacks from Mary's Gone Crackers are ”always minimally processed, sustainably sourced, and wildly delicious”--leading us to choose them as the winner for our Best Organic category!
These Super Seed Seaweed + Black Sesame crackers start with a super satisfying base of whole grain brown rice, quinoa, and seaweed which is then speckled with all types of seedy goodness like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, black sesame seeds, and flax seeds.
The whole mix is then seasoned with cilantro, garlic, cayenne pepper, and just the right touch of sea salt resulting in a deeply hearty yet pleasantly spicy good-for-you-cracker. If this is what “going crackers” looks like, we’re going with you, Mary!
All of that seed content really serves to boost the nutrient content of this cracker as each serving of these provides 5 grams of plant based protein, 10% your DV of iron, and 3 grams of heart healthy dietary fiber, plus at least 18 grams of 100% whole grains!
These crackers have a dense yet perfectly crunchy texture, nutty flavor, and give off a rustic, small batch vibe. We also love that they are certified vegan, USDA organic (and proud to support organic farmers!), and non-GMO project verified.
One thing we didn’t love about these crackers? Their rather off-putting appearance. The coloring is an odd, muddy gray-green hue, with a rather pulpy-looking texture. Also, there are some tough bits mixed into these crackers--almost like bits of hull or shell that didn’t get fully removed. It's also worth noting that these crackers are most certainly assertive in flavor. They won’t work with every pairing combo and they may not be to everyone’s taste.
Pros:
- Made from a mix of whole grains, seeds, and real seaweed.
- Texture is hearty yet crisp and thoroughly satisfying.
- Nutty, savory, slightly spicy flavor!
- Lots of nutrition in the form of protein, iron, whole grains, and fiber.
- USDA organic, non-GMO, and completely vegan.
Cons:
- Odd coloring and pulpy appearance makes these crackers not all that appetizing looking.
- A few tough bits of grain hull or seed shell in the mix.
- Very strong flavor profile decreases the versatility here.
Best Flavored Gluten Free Crackers: Hu Grain Free Pizza Crackers
Size: 4.25-ounce box
Flavor: Pizza
Here is how Hu Grain Free Pizza Crackers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
We encountered many different flavored gluten free crackers during our product shopping, but our favorite among them was, without a doubt, these Grain Free Pizza Crackers from the folks at Hu Kitchen.
Their special grain free flour blend consists of several base ingredients like almonds, cassava root, potatoes, coconuts, and sunflower. The mixture is punched up by a ton of tasty additions like tomato, coconut aminos, nutritional yeast, apple cider vinegar, oregano, shallots, marjoram, and rosemary--together producing a perfectly pizza flavored, paleo friendly snack!
These crackers are satisfyingly uniform little squares with a crave-ably crisp texture and a few decadent bits of flaky salt on top add plenty of flavor and texture. They’re super thin--almost melt in your mouth!--but somehow retain a lot of strength, as we surprisingly encountered very few broken crackers in our box.
And aside from being low in calories with just 100 per serving, these crackers are also free from refined starches and a number of potentially problematic ingredients like soybean oil, soy lecithin, canola oil, maltodextrin, tapioca, dairy, and gums. The nutrition panel features all wholesome ingredients, making it uncomplicated and easy to know exactly what went into this snack. For these reasons, and the fact that they are simply delicious, these are the crackers we found ourselves wanting to keep snacking on after the official taste testing was over.
As is often the case, you’ll find yourself paying the price for quality and good taste here as this 4.25-ounce package of Hu Grain Free Pizza Crackers hit our wallets the hardest at nearly 6 bucks! Also, food allergy sufferers beware that these crackers are unfortunately the least allergen friendly of all those we tested.
Aside from containing almond, coconut, and sesame ingredients, they are also processed on the same equipment as egg, milk, peanut, soy, and tree nut ingredients. They do ensure that the equipment goes through complete cleans between products but nevertheless, take care if cross contamination is at issue for you!
Pros:
- Made from grain free flours and 100% whole food ingredients!
- Pizza flavor is spot on and derived from tasty ingredients like real tomato, oregano, and shallot.
- Paleo friendly.
- Texture is super thin and crispy, but not at all fragile.
- Just 100 calories per serving.
- Free from refined starches and soy ingredients.
- Best tasting GF crackers, according to our tasting panel.
Cons:
- Very expensive, costing $1.40 per ounce.
- Contains several food allergen ingredients & poses some cross contamination issues.
Best Cheddar Gluten Free Crackers: Simple Mills Farmhouse Cheddar Almond Flour Crackers

- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0

- Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Cheddar cheese crackers are without a doubt a favorite among kids and adults alike! Therefore, you can understand our joy when we found these Cheddar Almond Flour Crackers from Simple Mills to be completely deserving of their own category.
To make these cheesy delights, a nut/seed flour base of almonds, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds is brought together by tapioca starch and cassava flour before being seasoned by onion, garlic, paprika, sea salt, and organic real cheddar cheese of course! A handful of these makes for the perfect salty, savory snack any time you like or, pair them with a cozy bowl of your favorite Chicken Noodle Soup (yes, there’s gluten free options on the list there too!) for a classic rainy day lunch.
The cheese flavor of these crackers is spot on, not too sharp but certainly present and we love how the color is nice and orange--just like a cheddar cracker should be! You don’t have to worry that this coloring is coming from anything artificial though, as these crackers are made from all whole food, good quality ingredients. Plus, no cheese dust! And, in addition to being gluten free, these crackers are completely grain free as well.
Overall, we have very few complaints with the Farmhouse Cheddar Almond Flour Crackers. As with many cheesy, tasty things though, the nutritional profile of these crackers suffers a bit. They have the highest fat content with 8 grams per serving, which represents a full 10% your DV of this macro!
Pros:
- Flour base is made of nuts and seeds--no grains!
- Made with real, organic cheddar cheese.
- Perfect combo of onion, garlic, and paprika make these cheese crackers taste just like the ones you remember.
- Crackers are brilliantly orange, thin, and crisp, without the cheese dust!
- No artificial ingredients--just whole, quality foods.
Cons:
- High in fat content, with 8 grams per 17-cracker serving.
Best Seedy Gluten Free Crackers: Flackers Flax & Fonio Ancient Grain Everything Crackers
Size: 4.5-ounce bag
Flavor: Everything
Here is how Flackers Flax & Fonio Ancient Grain Everything Crackers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.4 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
In addition to boasting the most fun-to-say-name, Flackers Flax & Fonio crackers are a seed lover's dream! In addition to flax, sesame (both white and black!), and poppy seed, these crackers also include a unique ingredient called fonio. This is a nutrient dense, ancient grain which grows happily in the arid conditions of West Africa and has a pleasant nutty flavor.
To give this cracker those everything bagel vibes, they also add in some roasted garlic, roasted onion, and sea salt--all that’s missing is a schmear of cream cheese! And luckily, the thick, crunchy texture of these crackers lend them nicely to holding up to such spreads and toppings.
Now, let’s get into that nutrient density we were touting a moment ago. First off, these crackers offer 4 grams of plant based protein per serving plus 5 grams of fiber--the highest we found across the board. And thanks to that fonio and flax seed goodness, these crackers are also fully loaded with micronutrients. We’re talkin’ 25% DV of thiamin, 20% DV of copper, 15% DV of magnesium, 15% DV of manganese, 10% DV of zinc, and smaller quantities of calcium, iron, and potassium.
These crackers are USDA certified organic, non-GMO project verified, and are packaged in a bag that is made from at least 30% recycled material. Good, good, and good!
Though the overall flavor of these ‘Everything’ Flackers is decent, we have to say, there’s something missing from the ‘everything’ blend. Maybe they just need a bit more salt, or to be heavier handed on the garlic? Either way, these crackers are more grain and seed-forward than seasoning-rich.
Also, these were the most expensive crackers we picked up--coming in at $6.50 for the small 4.5-ounce bag.
Pros:
- Made from a blend of hearty seeds and fonio, an ancient grain.
- Seasoned with roasted garlic and onion--just add cream cheese for a gluten free everything bagel-esque snack!
- Texture is thick, crunchy, and satisfying.
- Rich in protein, fiber, and tons of vitamins and minerals.
- USDA organic and non-GMO project verified.
- Packed in a partially recycled packaging.
Cons:
- Doesn’t quite hit “everything” flavor on the nose.
- The most expensive crackers of our whole evaluation.
Best Keto-Friendly Gluten Free Crackers: Trader Joe's Super Seedy Cheese Snack Bites with Puffed Quinoa & Whole Peppercorns
Size: 2.8-ounce bag
Flavor: Whole Peppercorn
Here is how Trader Joe's Super Seedy Cheese Snack Bites with Puffed Quinoa & Whole Peppercorns scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 4.0
- Nutrition Content: 3.9 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.2 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.3 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.3 / 5.0
When shopping for crackers--gluten free or otherwise--it can be tough to find low carb options seeing as the typical base ingredients tend to be grains and starches. But if you’re looking for low carb or keto-friendly crackers, these Super Seedy Cheese Snack Bites from Trader Joe’s are just the ticket!
First off, we love how the recipe is not at all complicated. Each cracker is a simple square of crisped parmesan cheese speckled by whole sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, puffed quinoa, black sesame seeds, and whole black peppercorns. That’s it!
The resultant texture is crisp and crunchy with a super yummy, savory, spicy, and slightly autumnal flavor profile thanks to those pumpkin seeds and plentiful black pepper. The beauty of these cheese-based crackers is that each serving has just 5 grams of net carbs, as compared to the average figure of 18 grams across all of the other crackers we tested! There are also 12 grams of protein and 25% your DV of calcium in each serving.
Though you might want to stay away from topping these crisps with more cheese, they are certainly versatile as you could easily top them with veggies, spreads, meats, or crumble them atop salads and soups for a nice, crunchy counterpart.
With all of that cheese, it should come as no surprise that these crackers are not the healthiest. They pack a whopping 6 grams of saturated fat (30% your DV) and have the highest sodium content of 360 milligrams per serving. It’s also worth noting that these crackers are definitely not for the faint of taste bud. With whole peppercorns included in the mix, that heat can definitely sneak up on you and also may be too assertive if you're looking for something to serve with more mildly flavored dips and toppings.
Pros:
- Made from a simple mixture of cheese, seeds, and seasonings!
- Ultra crisp texture and super savory taste.
- Low-carb and keto friendly, with just 5 net carbs per serving.
- Provides 12g protein and 25% DV of calcium per serving.
- Versatile–top them, crumble them, or eat them out of the bag!
Cons:
- High in saturated fats.
- High in sodium.
- Heat from the whole peppercorns can be a bit overpowering.
Best Topping-Friendly Gluten Free Crackers: Wasa Gluten Free Swedish Style Crispbread
Size: 5.4-ounce box
Flavor: Original Swedish Style
Here is how Wasa Gluten Free Swedish Style Crispbread scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
If having a topping friendly cracker is of the utmost importance to you, this Swedish Style Crispbread cracker from Wasa has got you covered! The large surface area, unassuming texture, and subtle flavor profile make these perfect for just about any topping you could dream of--whether sweet, savory, or somewhere in between. Just pile them high with peanut butter, yogurt and fruit, tuna salad, or any of your favorite cheeses for a satisfying snack.
These crackers feature an ingredients list of potato starch, amaranth flour, rice sourdough (who knew that was a thing?), and low-key yet interesting spices like fennel, anise, and caraway. We love that they are only lightly salted which not only keeps the sodium content nice and low--just 120 milligrams per serving!--but also makes them adaptable to any number of spreads or toppings that might bring their own salt content to the table too, like our Vegan Holiday Cheese Ball.
We also get great vibes from the company itself, as Wasa is a carbon neutral company. This means that they keep their greenhouse gas emissions as low as possible and for whatever emissions they do produce, they are sure to offset by supporting reforestation and renewable energy efforts. And, they also proudly sponsor the celiac disease foundation, a cause that is likely near and dear to the gluten free hearts of many of you out there!
If you’re looking for a cracker to eat by itself, you’ll likely find these to be a little bland. Also, we have to say, we were confused by the portioning and indicated serving size of these crackers.
On the box, the indicated serving size is 1 cracker. However, to bring this quantity into the same gram for gram ballpark as the other crackers we were tasked with comparing them to, we considered 2 crackers to be a more comparable serving. But yet, within the box, the crackers are in sealed 3-packs! Very confusing and off-base from every other cracker we tested.
Pros:
- Large surface and adaptable flavor profile makes these perfect for any topping combo!
- Contains an interesting & subtle spice blend of fennel, anise, and caraway.
- Low in sodium.
- Produced by a carbon neutral company.
- Every purchase helps to support the Celiac Disease Foundation!
Cons:
- Flavor profile might be a little plain for enjoying on their own.
- Serving size & product portioning is confusing.
Best Unique Gluten Free Crackers: Craize Coconut & Toasted Corn Crackers
Size: 4-ounce bag
Flavor: Coconut
Here is how Craize Coconut & Toasted Corn Crackers scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
These Craize Coconut & Toasted Corn Crackers are certainly a unique experience, unlike any of the other gluten free crackers we’ve met! Using a traditional South American arepa recipe as a jumping off point, this cracker company dreamt up a series of toasted corn crackers with a broad surface and a super crunchy texture.
This coconut flavor of the series contains both yellow and white corn meal plus dark brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and of course plenty of real coconut. The result is a sweet and crispy treat, or as one of our tasting panel put it, “a dessert cracker”. We didn’t even know dessert crackers were a thing but after tasting these, we aren’t sure how we ever lived without the concept!
In addition to being certified vegan, these crackers are non-GMO project verified and made in a soy-free, nut-free facility (with the exception of coconuts of course). Each serving provides 3 grams of dietary fiber per serving and has the lowest sodium content of all crackers we tested at just 100 milligrams per serving!
Though these crackers are 100% delicious and honestly difficult to stop eating straight from the package, their texture and flavor lends them nicely to a number of different uses such as spreading with toppings like our 4-Ingredient Vegan Nutella, dunking in ice cream, or crumbling into breading or cracker crusts!
It’s definitely worth noting that the sugar content is a bit high here, with 7 grams per serving. Also, these coconut crackers do seem a bit unevenly cooked as some have a rather pale coloring while others are deeply toasted. No matter the level of toasting though, they all tasted great to us!
Pros:
- Super unique cracker, inspired by traditional arepas.
- Sweet flavor and crunchy texture makes these the perfect “dessert cracker”.
- Certified vegan and non-GMO.
- Produced in a soy-free, nut-free facility.
- High in fiber and low in sodium.
- Delicious on their own or used in sweet recipes!
Cons:
- Higher in sugar than most other GF cracker varieties.
- Crackers aren’t the most evenly cooked.
Best Gluten Free Cracker FAQs
Do Graham Crackers Have Gluten?
Sadly yes, most of your typical graham crackers do contain gluten. Traditional graham crackers are made using graham flour, a specific variety of whole wheat flour and the key to making a graham cracker a graham cracker!
However, if you’re looking for store bought gluten free graham crackers, Pamela's Gluten Free Honey Graham Crackers are an excellent stand in. There are several other brands out there to choose from as well--just be sure to look at the ingredients list and for the “certified gluten free” seal.
Do Gluten Free Saltines Exist?
While the term “Saltine” appears to be a word used for only gluten-containing crackers, there are many options out there that do strike a similar note.
For a gluten free saltine like experience, some folks swear by the Glutino Gluten Free Table Crackers while others prefer those offered by popular GF brand, Schar. We were unable to get our hands on a box of these for our taste test, so we can't vouch for them ourselves.
Are Goldfish Crackers Gluten Free?
Unfortunately no, there is not even one variety of gluten free Goldfish crackers to be found. To get your cheesy cracker fix (in an admittedly less amusing way), we highly recommend the Simple Mills Farmhouse Cheddar Almond Flour Crackers or, try Blue Diamond’s Cheddar Cheese Almond Nut Thins.
Do Triscuits Have Gluten?
Yep, sad to say but all Triscuit brand products have gluten in them. For a hearty cracker experience similar to that offered by Triscuits, try these options:
- Flackers Flax & Fonio Ancient Grain Everything Crackers
- Any of the Mary’s Gone Crackers Super Seed options
- Maine Crisp Savory Fig crackers (if you are luckier than us and can even find these in your local market!)
Final Thoughts on the Best Gluten Free Crackers
Going gluten free shouldn’t mean you have to write off all of your favorite crunchy, crispy snack foods! Though you could easily get your salty snack fix with a bag of tortilla chips or a bowl of roasted nuts, sometimes, nothing can quite fill the role of a cracker like…well, a cracker!
The gluten free crackers we featured in this review all hit the right spot with us for different reasons. Whether you crave the most perfectly seeded snack cracker or are looking for the best cracker to serve your infamous herbed cheese on, we've got you covered with all the best gluten free cracker options right here.
