What is Ginger Ale?
When we say ginger ale, we’re talking about ginger flavored, sweetened, carbonated beverages. Though it contains the word “ale” in the name, these refreshments are non-alcoholic and distinct from ginger beer, another type of ginger drink which we'll get into a bit towards the end of our article!
Types of Ginger Ale
Like other soft drinks, all of the ginger ales we evaluated have the same basic components of carbonated water, sweetener, and flavoring.
From here, things can get varied. Some ginger ale makers use real ginger extract to flavor their refreshments while others rely on synthetic flavorings. Still, other versions use actual whole ginger root to spice things up!
There are variations in the sweeteners used as well, as some ginger ales make use of refined syrups while others opt for unrefined cane sugar, or, alternative sweeteners. We also encountered ginger ales with added flavors and/or aromatics as well as options that are minimally processed.

The Taste Test
Each of our gingery test subjects was sampled neat (room temperature, no ice) as well as chilled and poured over ice, so as to compare the flavor profile featured by each under different temperature conditions.
The Criteria
After taste testing, researching, and comparing our batch of ginger ales, we awarded them all a grade in each of the following 5 criteria:
- Taste & Texture: considering the all-important gingery bite of each soda and how well (or not well!) it balances with other flavors like sweetness and tang.
- Nutrition Content: specifically considering the calories, sugar content, and net carb count of each ginger ale as well as overall quality of ingredients used. Though different ginger ale brands feature different serving sizes, we standardized everything to reflect a typical 12-fluid-ounce portion.
- Unique Characteristics: taking into account special flavors, noteworthy ingredients, or any other factor that would set one ginger ale apart from the others.
- Value: standardized to the price per ounce.
- Production & Packaging: evaluating how & where each ginger ale is brewed and bottled, if there are any notable manufacturing methods at play, and any added convenience--or lack thereof--in the packaging.
These 5 scores were then used to calculate an overall average score for each ginger ale, and the highest scoring test subjects in each of our review categories were dubbed the winners!
Best ‘Big Brand’ Ginger Ale:
Canada Dry Ginger Ale
Size: 20-Ounce Bottle
Here is how Canada Dry Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.2 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.7 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.2 / 5.0
When it comes to soft drinks, there are a few key players--“big brands” if you will. After comparing the big 3 ginger ale options (Schweppes, Seagram’s, and Canada Dry) we found the latter to be the clear leader!
Canada Dry, now owned by Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, was born in 1904 and originally crafted as a lighter, drier alternative to the highly sweetened, syrupy versions of the day. As a result, we found this ginger ale to be less sweet, tangier, and more tannic at the finish as compared to the other ginger ales considered to be industry leaders.
Our tasting panel found Canada Dry ginger ale to be spicier and more gingery as compared to the competitors and really enjoying the refreshing experience offered by the multitude of fizzy bubbles. Another benefit of these big brands--the reseal-ability! As opposed to smaller craft brands which often employ twist-off metal caps, we love that these plastic soda bottles are completely resealable. This way, if you don’t finish the entire drink, you can easily replace the cap and protect those bubbles for next time.
This is extra good news because after one look at the nutrition panel, you might find yourself committed to sticking to just one portion of this stuff. Instead of real sugar, Canada Dry Ginger Ale is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup--a highly refined sweetener that many folks opt to avoid these days.
Also, this ginger ale was one of a few we evaluated that makes use of sodium benzoate. While this preservative on its own is GRAS (“generally regarded as safe”, as per the FDA), when it has exposure to citric and/or other acids (such as those found in sodas), it may cause harmful long term effects. More research is needed on the interactions of preservatives such as these, but it’s definitely something to take into consideration when choosing a beverage!
Pros:
- Tasting panel favorite among the big brand ginger ales!
- Crafted as a drier, lighter alternative to sweeter ginger ales.
- Has more gingery spice and tannins.
- Excellent carbonation!
- Bottle is fully resealable and keeps bubbles intact even after opening.
Cons:
- Sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.
- Contains sodium benzoate--a preservative which comes with some health concerns.
Best Vintage Style Ginger Ale:
Boylan Bottling Co. Ginger Ale
Size: 12-Ounce Bottle
Here is how Boylan Bottling Co. Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
If a vintage style soda is just what the doctor ordered (seriously, they used to!), picking up a bottle of Boylan Bottling Co. ginger ale is bound to leave you feeling like a Peaky Blinders cast member. It all started way back in 1891 when a pharmacist created his own special elixir from birch sap and sold it from the back of his wagon.
Thankfully, you don’t have to wait at the town square just to score a sip of this craft soda company’s goods. Nowadays, their ginger ales (and other beverages!) are neatly packed into slim, dark green glass bottles, each of which is stamped with Boylan branding. Talk about vintage vibes!
Adding to the authenticity is the fact that this soda is made with real cane sugar as opposed to refined syrups. Another unique aspect of this soda is that it includes ingredients like lemon and lime oil which provide a citrusy burst that complements the ginger’s natural spice quite nicely. The ginger flavor doesn’t hit you up front here, rather it lingers as a gentle heat on the tongue and in the back of the throat afterwards. Our tasters dubbed this drink an “all-around good, wonderfully refreshing ginger ale!”, making it a serious bargain when you consider the price tag is just $0.11 per ounce, or just over $1.35 for each glass bottle.
We don’t have too many complaints about this product, but it’s definitely worth noting that if you’re looking for gingery heat in your ginger ale, this soda may be a bit too tame for you. We absolutely love the taste, but it strikes somewhere between classic lemon-lime soda and actual ginger ale.
Also, anyone keeping an eye on their sodium intake, take note that this one contains the highest level of sodium of all the ales we tested. The 65 milligrams per 12-ounce serving is quite low, but still, if you aim for sodium free foods, there are plenty of other sodium free ginger ales out there to try.
Pros:
- This soda comes with some seriously historical roots!
- Packed in vintage-inspired, glass bottles that have a great feel.
- Made with 100% real cane sugar.
- Includes other flavorings like citrus oils.
- A flavor favorite among our tasting panel.
- One of the most affordable ginger ales we tested.
Cons:
- Soda is not all that ginger-forward.
- Has the highest quantity of sodium of all the ales we evaluated.
Best Unfiltered Ginger Ale:
Bruce Cost Unfiltered Original Ginger Ale
Size: 12-Ounce Bottle
Here is how Bruce Cost Unfiltered Original Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
While most soft drinks are clarified, we did find several of our ginger ale test subjects to be pleasantly murky due to an intentional lack of filtration. Among them, our favorite: Bruce Cost Unfiltered Original Ginger Ale.
This rustic looking ginger soda is crafted from just 4 ingredients: carbonated water, natural cane sugar, 100% fresh ginger, and a touch of citric acid. Since it is minimally processed and unfiltered, all of the tiny bits of real ginger sediment remain floating around in the beverage itself giving it a wonderfully cloudy appearance and excellent ginger coloring. Of all of the ginger ales we tested, this one scored the highest as far as ginger flavor goes, with a hit of spice at the end and some serious ginger kick!
If you usually prefer ginger beer as opposed to ale, this option may be more up your alley as it strikes similar notes in both flavor and appearance. And, this one is completely free from GMO ingredients and the cane sugar used is organic, making this soda vegan.
On the downside, we were not all that impressed with the carbonation in this ginger beer, as it features small and, if you ask us, not quite enough bubble action. Bruce Cost ginger ale is pretty high in both calories and carbs as each 12-ounce serving contains 160 calories and 41 grams of net carbs. We know sodas and soft drinks are one of those in-moderation-treats but eek!
Pros:
- Made from just 4 simple ingredients.
- Minimally processed and unfiltered.
- Real ginger pulp remains in the soda, giving excellent flavor and appearance.
- Free from GMOs.
- Made with organic cane sugar, making this a vegan soda.
Cons:
- Lacking in carbonation.
- High in calories.
- High net carb count.
Best Dry Ginger Ale:
GuS 'Grown Up Soda' Dry Ginger Ale
Size: 12-Ounce Bottle
Here is how GuS 'Grown Up Soda' Dry Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.4 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
Dry ginger ale lovers, this one’s for you! When the word “dry” is used to refer to ginger ale, or any beverage for that matter, it means you can expect the beverage to be less sweet than the counterparts. If less-sugary-more-gingery ginger ale is what you’re looking for, this option from GuS will win your heart and taste buds over!
The namesake acronym stands for Grown Up Soda--a soda company cranking out soft drinks that are an intentional diversion from the sticky sweet, assertively flavored versions that dominate the market share. This ginger ale refers to itself as “dry and refreshing” and we most certainly agree! The smooth tasting, crisp, lightly sweetened soda provides the perfect canvas on which spicy ginger root can really showcase its balanced notes of hot and bitter.
Where most other ginger ale varieties feature anywhere between 35-40 grams of sugar per 12-ounce serving, this option has just 22 grams. Still a decent dose of sugar mind you, but it definitely offers a nice midway point between completely sugar saturated and completely sugar free sodas. We also love the pale gold coloring of this refreshment as well as the fact that it is preservative free.
Our sole complaint regarding this ginger ale is in regard to its price tag. Each glass bottle of GuS 'Grown Up Soda' Dry Ginger Ale cost us near $3.00, working out to $0.25 per ounce! The only ginger ale to be more expensive than this one was a regional specialty (from far outside our region--more on that one later), but as far as nationally available brands go, GuS is definitely the priciest.
Pros:
- Offers a less sweet, more dry flavor profile.
- Most crisp & refreshing according to our tasting panel!
- Contains just 22 grams of sugar per serving.
- Has a natural, light, golden coloring.
- Free from preservatives.
Cons:
- Very expensive, coming out to almost $3 bucks per bottle.
Best Flavored Ginger Ale:
Polar Premium Green Tea Ginger Ale
Size: 33.8-Ounce Bottle
Here is how Polar Premium Green Tea Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.3 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.2 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
Looking for a ginger ale with a bit of extra flavor? Though you may think of the team at Polar Beverages as seltzer and tonic water specialists, they’re over there putting out some excellent tasting soft drinks too, and we found their Green Tea Ginger Ale to be no exception.
According to the brand, this blend got its inspiration from Japanese matcha--a specific type of green tea--and we found ourselves loving the combo. The green tea flavor notes are clear and pleasant in this beverage and we found ourselves impressed that we could actually detect the floral taste and aroma! Not an easy feat in the face of fiery ginger flavor.
This ginger ale has a good amount of bubble action and is nicely balanced between sweet and tart, perhaps erring a bit on the sweeter side. The ginger flavor itself is light to medium, making this drink suitable to a range of taste preferences, and we also found this soft drink to be the most affordable option, coming in at just $0.10 per ounce.
We’d also like to point out that each 12-ounce serving of this stuff provides 50 milligrams of potassium per serving. It might not be much in the grand scheme of nutrition, but hey, for a soda, we’ll take any micronutrient content we can get!
We mentioned this ginger ale leans more sweet than spicy? Well that all began to make perfect sense when we rolled the bottle over and took a look at the sugar content. 37 grams of sugar per 12-ounce serving! That’s 72% your DV in just one glass of ginger ale.
Also, we think it’s possible we may have just gotten lucky in our local supermarket when we found a stash of this Green Tea Ginger Ale, because when we went to research its availability elsewhere, it seems out of stock in many locations. TL;DR: you might have a tougher time finding this unique ginger ale flavor but if you do and you’re a green tea lover, it’s worth the sugar splurge!
Pros:
- Flavor is a unique juxtaposition of floral green tea and spicy ginger root.
- Nice carbonation here!
- Light to medium on the heat level.
- The most cost effective ginger ale in our whole study--just $1.25 for the 1-liter bottle!
- Provides a little dose of potassium.
Cons:
- Very high in sugar--over 70% DV per serving.
- Unlikely to be available in all areas.
Best Ginger Ale for Mixing:
Q Ginger Ale
Size: 7.5-Ounce Can
Here is how Q Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Q Ginger Ale takes the cake as the best ginger ale for mixing cocktails. While Fever Tree’s ginger ale has long held the top spot as a mixer, Q won us over this time around and here’s why.
In the words of the masterminds behind Q Ginger Ale: ”We don’t use less sugar because we are counting calories, we do it to make a better drink. A mixer that’s too sweet masks the subtleties of your favorite spirit”--and how right they are! By replacing some of the sugar content with agave nectar, Q is able to keep its sugar content lower than the competitors while also introducing an added layer of flavor to the blend.
Agave is not the only thing bringing flavor to the table in each little can of Q though, the deeply original concoction makes use of an interesting blend of spices and aromatics like coriander, cardamom, chili peppers, orange peel, and rose oil. These natural flavors--plus plenty of ginger extract of course--come together to form a soft drink which is somehow simultaneously subtle yet far from bland.
This mixologist’s dream product is non-GMO project verified, much lower in calories than other ginger ales we tested with just 96 calories per 12-ounce serving, and the packaging even has some refreshing (and easy) cocktail recipes printed right on.
Though we love this ginger ale for mixing up into cocktails and mocktails, we can’t help but think it may not be all that ideal if you’re looking for a ginger ale to drink on its own. It is packaged in 7.5-ounce cans which are perfect for making a drink or two, but if you’re looking for a straight up soft drink, you might find yourself opening a couple cans just to fill your glass.
Also, we found the level of carbonation in this ginger ale to be a bit aggressive, especially when combined with the hint of chili pepper in the background. If you’re not careful, the mix of heat and bubbles can give you a little kick in the back of the throat. And finally, take note that this ginger ale is completely clear! Again, great for mixing into a drink where you don’t want to alter the color of your spirit of choice, but not very ginger ale-y on its own.
Pros:
- Sweetened with agave nectar, keeping the sugar content lower.
- Specifically crafted so that the natural flavor of a spirit can shine through.
- Made with a special blend of aromatics and spices.
- Non-GMO project verified.
- Low in calories.
- Comes with easy cocktail recipes.
Cons:
- Cans are very small.
- Has very sharp carbonation, especially when combined with the ginger & chili spice.
- Is completely clear–no characteristic ginger ale coloring here!
Best Extra Spicy Ginger Ale:
Blenheim Original Old No. 3 "Hot" Ginger Ale
Size: 12-Ounce Bottle
Here is how Blenheim Original Old No. 3 "Hot" Ginger Ale scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 3.9 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 3.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.3 / 5.0
Blenheim Bottling Company is a completely independent soft drink maker specializing in just one type of soda: ginger ale. Aside from a big ol’ dose of ginger flavor, their cult favorite “Hot” Ginger Ale also contains hot chili pepper (much more of it than the hint found in Q Ginger Ale), thereby turning this soda into a daredevil’s dream.
The result is a rich, rusty colored beverage--looking more like a cream soda to be honest!--that packs a surprising punch. First comes the heat of ginger root, then the chili essence. When combined with the effervescence of the soft drink itself, this one becomes a real experience to sip on. Keeping true to roots, the base of the ginger ale remains to be mineral spring water from a specific spring in Blenheim, South Carolina
The independent spirit of this soda company shines right on through the product itself with its unique labeling and presentation. Each of their ginger ale varieties sports a different color cap: red for hot, gold for not, and white for diet. Blenheim Ginger Ale is the only one we needed an actual bottle opener to get into, and while the twist-off nature of all of the others is an added convenience, we love the fun flair and authenticity that a classic pop off cap brings to the table.
The downside to all of that chili-ginger heat is that it calls for a ton of sugar to balance things out. This soda packs 41 grams per serving and gives the ginger ale a thick, syrupy texture that leaves sort of a sticky residue on the tongue.
Also, this soda is not widely available. We had to turn to amazon to score a bottle, where each single serve bottle costs a whopping $6.00. If you’re willing to commit to a 24-pack of Blenheim’s special sodas, you can get them much more economically via their website.
(P.S. Can’t get your hands on a bottle of this hot stuff but dying for some spice in your life? Get your hot chili pepper fix with a bowl of our Thai Zucchini Noodles or Sweet Potato Curry!)
Pros:
- Packs a punch of ginger heat plus chili essence!
- Coloring is rich, deep, caramelly, and inviting.
- Flavor is “spicy, yet refreshing and very fun”, according to tasters.
- Made with special mineral spring water, as it has been since the beginning!
- Comes with color coded, authentic pop-off cabs for a vintage vibe.
Cons:
- Has the highest sugar content of all ginger ales we tested.
- Not readily available in all areas.
- Very expensive (unless you’re willing to buy in bulk or are local to South Carolina).
Best Zero Sugar Ginger Ale:
Reed's All Natural 'Real' Ginger Ale Zero
Size: 12-Ounce Can
Here is how Reed's All Natural 'Real' Ginger Ale Zero scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.3 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.7 / 5.0
- Value: 4.5 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Reed’s Ginger Ale “Zero” takes us from super sweet to sugar free, and also takes the top spot in our zero sugar ginger ale category!
Unlike traditional diet soda options which are usually made with sweeteners of questionable safety like aspartame and sucralose, Reed’s ginger ale is sweet yet sugar free thanks to a special sweetener blend of erythritol, stevia leaf extract, and monk fruit extract. In keeping with brand tradition, Reed’s zero sugar options are made with real Jamaican ginger--just the same as their regular ginger ale, ginger beer, and ginger candy products are!
The result is a refreshing beverage that has excellent ginger flavor and a nice sweetness balance. In addition to 0 sugars, Reed's All Natural 'Real' Ginger Ale Zero also has 0 calories and 0 net carbs, making it certified keto as well. This soft drink is free from artificial preservatives and GMOs.
The only potential downside to this ginger ale option is that those alternative sweeteners definitely have an impact on the overall taste of the drink. Some folks love ‘em, while others are put off by the taste or land somewhere in the middle.
If you’re like us, you’ll find that despite the use of natural alternatives like stevia and monk fruit extract, this soda gives a little bit of an off taste and somewhat cloying feeling. All in all though, not bad for an alternatively sweetened option!
Pros:
- Sweetened with a special tri-sweetener blend.
- No aspartame or sucralose.
- Made with real Jamaican ginger root!
- Nicely balanced ginger-sweet flavor.
- 0 sugar, 0 carb, 0 calorie.
- Keto certified.
- No artificial preservatives or GMOs.
Cons:
- Alternative sweeteners have an off taste or cloying feel for some folks.
Best Ginger Ale FAQs
Which Ginger Ale Has the Best Ginger Flavor?
In terms of strongest ginger taste, our tasting panel was split between Bruce Cost and GuS. While Bruce Cost does contain the most ginger, we found the flavor to be slightly masked by the amount of sugar. GuS on the other hand offers a bit less bite, but more purity!
What’s the Difference Between Ginger Ale and Ginger Beer?
Both drinks are non-alcoholic, ginger-flavored, sweet, and effervescent but there are some distinct differences between the two. While ginger ale is essentially a soft drink with ginger ingredients and/or flavoring, ginger beer is typically brewed and fermented--a process which gives it a stronger flavor, cloudy appearance, and more kick.
Is Ginger Ale Good for an Upset Stomach?
Maybe! Gingerol, that same compound found in ginger which gives it that characteristic gingery bite, is proven to help with digestive symptoms. The properties of this stuff help improve intestinal motility and can relieve nausea and bloating.
That said, many ginger ale brands don’t actually have quite enough gingerol to really have much benefit and drinking ginger ale with too much sugar could actually make some digestive symptoms worse! If you’re looking for some serious relief, reach for ginger ale options that have real ginger on the ingredients label and lower sugar content. Or, go straight to the source and brew a tea of fresh ginger root yourself!
Is Ginger Ale Good for Dehydration?
The same goes for dehydration issues! If you find yourself low on fluids due to illness, exercise, or heat, too much sugar can actually make those dehydration symptoms worse.
Reach for low-sugar soft drink options like those made by GuS, or, cut a heavily sweetened ginger ale with equal parts sparkling water. Other options for rehydration? Water-laden fruits like watermelon, or naturally electrolyte rich coconut water.
Is Ginger Ale Healthier Than Cola?
It depends! Many of the ginger ales we evaluated boasted sugar/calorie contents that are far lower than the big-brand colas out there. However, some brands of ginger ale are just as sugar laden and calorie dense as popular colas. As always, one must compare nutrition labels to get the real scoop!
Final Thoughts After Sipping All the Best Ginger Ales
The bottom line here is that no matter what type of ginger ale you opt for, drinking a glass of ginger ale is one jazzy way to quench your thirst! Some ginger ales are downright hot while others are sweet and mellow. Each of them brings at least a little bit of heat thanks to everyone's favorite spicy rhizome: ginger.
