I live in Queensland, Australia right now have done for a good 6 years now.
I’ll have been married for 4years in December of this year and am exceptionally close to the Husbands family (the Clan) – my family remains in Western Australia and it is my ongoing mission to convince them it’s easier for the 2 of them to come here then it is for me to relocate. I work as a Social Worker and thus the name of my blog – baking and cooking is often my “Self Care” for my job. If it’s been a stressful/emotionally draining day at work I head into the kitchen grab a cook book and go to town on the first recipe that grabs my eye. I did not learn this love of food from my family....my mother (bless her heart) despises cooking – now when I visit she often has a list of things she’d like me to make and freeze so that perhaps for a few weeks post my visit she won’t need to cook. It is something that has simply developed over time and I do love it.
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?
My apple corer – I know sad isn’t it? A device for something so simple to do, but I eat an apple....every day so it comes in handy
Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?
Not a certain dish/dessert – just for dessert! I am the designated dessert provider at the Clan’s weekly family dinner!
What is the ultimate comfort food to you?
Anything with pasta in it....
Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite.. why?
Winter – I love rain and the fresh crispness of cold weather. It makes me feel alive and rejuvenated. I think it’s easier to get warm then it is to get cool. Plus....I get migraines and blood noses from the heat (Air-conditioning is my saviour) so I’m naturally inclined to prefer the opposite of that.
In food related additions to this, I love soups....and when its 35C outside one doesn’t want soup....
Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?
Reading – loved it since I was little, I still struggle at night time wanting to “read just one more page” as the book falls asleep on me!
Photography – only a recent and very much developing hobby, the Husband is the expert in this but I’m learning.....slowly
What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?
Any lily really they’re just so beautiful and elegant looking. Though, I am partial to white roses as well.
What’s your favorite holiday and why?
Christmas – it has been traditionally the time of the year when all the family comes together and we enjoy good food and each other’s company. I’ve grown up in a small family but also grown up often away from my grandparents and so the only time we all got together was Christmas. Now that I live on the other side of the country to my mum and brother and my grandparents live a 6 hour drive south of me Christmas continues to be a celebration of family because we do come together. Now of course I am a member of the Clan and my Christmas’ are bigger but that just makes them better in my opinion.
Reading any good books lately? Which ones?!
I love all books, I really do, I read most genre’s and enjoy them – I often have more than 1 book on the go. I am currently reading David Balducci’s The Killer and finding it interesting. I also am in the process of reading I escaped from Auschwitz by Rudolf Vrba. I recently read a number of Jennifer Fallon books which I enjoyed immensely too. Further,
You’ve had a rough week. We feel your pain. How do you relax after a rough week?
Friday night will involve a HOT shower on my return from home – and it won’t be my water conserving 3 minute shower (I know, I know....) it will be deliciously long and soothing. I will then get into some comfortable (and not very attractive...sorry Husband) clothes and curl up on the sofa with a good book.
Saturday morning I’m up (early as usual...no sleep in’s for me) and off to do some exercise – a few laps at the pool perhaps, or maybe a jog. Then I will return home for a BIG mug of coffee and then.....the baking/cooking will begin!!!! And, depending on how rough it will either be the whole weekend or a few hours.....
Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?
Gosh it’s hard to decide/choose. I loved parts of the US; there are places in the world I desperately want to go too but just haven’t been to yet....Australia has it’s own places of beauty and allure (I’ve seen most of WA in my nomadic childhood) I loved Europe – especially the Scottish Highlands (there’s something about them that just calls to me) But, actually surprisingly I would have to say South Africa – maybe it’s because I don’t know if/when I’ll ever go back, maybe it’s because going there gave me a whole new level of understanding of the Husband but I love it and want to go back desperately. I wouldn’t want to live there – and perhaps that is what makes it top the Highlands, but as a vacation spot? As long as you’re aware and make smart choices...South Africa is the go.
Aside from chocolate for most of us, do you have a food addiction?
Ahh...this goes back to my comfort food. Pasta....It’s a problem. A big one. Seriously, sometimes when I make it I fear that the pasta itself will never make its way to join the sauce I’ve created to go with it. As it drains I pick....and I pick....and I pick. When I think about what I want to eat....pasta is always at the forefront of my mind. It’s a problem.
What kind of colors do you like? Pastels? Earth tones? Brights? Neons? Etc.
My favorite colour is red, all shades of it. I love it, it makes me happy. Having said that, all my house is earth tones, because I find them relaxing and soothing. I don’t have a lot of red homeware, I would never buy a red kitchen appliance – but clothes, handbags, purses, glasses (I’m short sighted) and shoes ... I head straight to the red. Though I guess some shades of red are earth tones aren’t they?
If you had the choice of a free kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom makeover – which would you choose and why?
Oh my gosh! Easy! My kitchen!!!!!!!! My little house (affectionately called the postage stamp) does not have a good kitchen! It just doesn’t – it works, it allows me to do what I want to do, but functionally? It’s terrible! I have kitchen things in my television cabinet in my lounge for goodness sake! There is NOT enough bench space.....I manage out of pure determination, but it’s not easy.
Do any pets own you? If so, what are they and what are their names?
Ahh yes – the Husband tries to change it, but that would be my Persian fluff ball Gordie. I inherited this cat from a friend of a friend, and thus inherited the name – which stems from “Gordon Tallis” a Rugby League player, which makes me cringe because I’m a union girl!
What’s your favorite family tradition?
When a girl is born into the family a piece of jewellery is purchased for them. I like it, it’s a sweet tradition. I have a bracelet that I love – I don’t wear jewellery that often (except for my wedding rings of course), but when I do it is often my piece of choice. I have tried to inject it into the Clan – when my niece was born, I got her a necklace.
