I am now, and have pretty much always been, a chips girl. Don’t get me wrong, I love sweets, but salty, crunchy goodness is one of my main weaknesses. When I was asked to sample John Wm. Macy’s CheeseSticks I was very excited. I mean, cheese curls are kind of addicting for me, so getting to try something “real” sounded like a great treat.
While I had looked at the website (www.cheesesticks.com) in advance, I was amazed by the selection of products that arrived at my door. From their line of CheeseSticks, CheeseCrisps and SweetSticks (12 different flavor combinations in all), I received eight boxes of treats to try. And try them I did! All eight varieties!
Overall I was quite pleased with the CheeseSticks and Crisps. They are light, airy, crispy and fresh tasting. I have a personal preference for the Crisps, as they are bite-sized and fun for snacking while the Sticks are a bit more crumbly (which makes sense, as the Crisps can be eaten in one bite and the Sticks can’t!).
I brought the Melting Parmesan CheeseSticks to a get together at a neighbor’s house. I thought it would be a great testing sight, as there would be six adults and six children ranging from 2 to 6 years old. All of us were pleasantly surprised. The sourdough tang came through nicely, but wasn’t overwhelming. While I might have liked a bit of a stronger cheese flavor, I did find myself going back to the box quite a few times. And the kids all loved them, which is always a ringing endorsement!
The Asiago and Cheddar CheeseCrisps came to a staff meeting with me, where they were met with a challenging offer of available cheese puffs. I was pleased to see that the CheeseCrisps went – there were none left at the end of the 45 minute long meeting. Two coworkers in particular were very complimentary and asked me to note their enjoyment in my review.
The Smoked Jalapeno CheeseCrisps were brought to a family get together. My husband was very excited for these, as he loves spicy foods. I liked the crisps, and didn’t find them too hot for my more “delicate” (read, wimpy!) tastes, and my sister-in-law loved them, and took the box home with her! I also brought the Java Cinnamon SweetSticks to the family. These were the ones I was most nervous about – sweet cheese sticks? While the cheesiness came though, I was really impressed with the sweet, cinnamon flavor. While it isn’t a flavor combination I would have sought out, it really worked well.
The run down for the other flavors sampled:
CheeseSticks: Original Cheddar – nice, but not my favorite. I would prefer a stronger cheese flavor. Dijon Swiss – the Dijon came though really nicely, I really enjoyed these!
CheeseCrisps: Sesame Gruyere – very subtle. Both my husband and I would have liked the sesame to have been stronger, but they were quite good.
SweetSticks: Madagascar Vanilla – very good. I am partial to vanilla, so this might have affected my thoughts on the matter, but my husband, a die-hard chocoholic, through they were great.
John Wm Macy’s CheeseSticks could really make a great addition to many meals, as appetizers, accompaniment for a salad, and even dessert. I was impressed with the quality, variety and flavors of the Sticks, Crisps and SweetSticks. I think they have a fun versatility which can really work well in pretty much any snacking situation!
